What you'll do
This Mercor role puts you in the reviewer's seat on Korean speech data for Amazon's Sonic effort. Two audit collections run side by side:
- Multilingual Transcription Audit: compare a recording of human or agent speech with the transcript an annotator wrote, apply every error code that fits, mark pass or fail, and write a short explanation
- Forced Alignment Audit: check segments an automated aligner cut at word level, confirming timestamps and reference text, and fixing what is wrong by adjusting, splitting, merging, adding or removing segments
Korean has particular audit pitfalls. Spacing (띄어쓰기) is often inconsistent even among native writers, and it decides what a "word" segment is; heavy sound change across syllable boundaries (liaison, nasalisation, tensing) means the spoken form can sound very different from the spelling, so you need to know which one the rulebook wants. Particles that merge into the preceding word are easy to misalign.
The ad describes both collections as 5.00 audit hours per task, with a written reason required for every judgment. You complete a short calibration before production.
Who qualifies
- Native or near-native Korean as spoken in South Korea: raised there, or fully fluent with five or more years of residence in such a region. Stated as a hard requirement.
- Strong English reading and writing for the rulebook, error codes and rationales
- Rigour in applying a written standard over hundreds of judgments; transcription, subtitling, localisation, annotation or QA experience counts in your favour
- Close listening for similar sounds and word boundaries
Helpful: AI annotation or evaluation experience, linguistics or phonetics, waveform tools.
The ad does not require current residence anywhere, so no country restriction is set here.
What it pays
$25 per hour, Mercor's published rate, the same as the Portuguese version. It sits in the middle of the nine Sonic audit languages: above Hindi ($18) and Chinese ($21.50), below Japanese ($37.50), Italian and Spanish ($39.50), and French and German ($41.50). No explanation for the spread is given.
Weekly payments on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Audit-level work with clear written standards
- Fully remote, on your own schedule
- Good preparation for Korean QA and linguistic lead roles
Less good:
- Well below the Japanese rate for the identical task
- Written English rationales on every item slow you down
- No hours or duration stated; independent contractor terms
