What you'll do
This is the chemistry half of Mercor's energetic materials red-team panel. Where the sister engineering role covers hardware, this one wants people who have formulated and tested specialty materials in a licensed or government facility. The panel checks whether frontier AI models give full answers to legitimate process-safety and quality questions and refuse the requests that would genuinely help someone cause harm. A needless refusal of a routine stability question is marked as a failure.
Each task:
- Write a single-turn prompt from your chemistry background, labelled benign, dual-use or adversarial
- Evaluate the model's response against a defined policy standard
- Write the reference answer, with the technical reasoning behind it
In this field, the mechanism-versus-procedure line matters more than subject matter. Safety data, stability testing and handling limits protect production staff and are widely taught; step-by-step making is a different thing. Being able to say precisely where a response crossed from one to the other, in plain language, is what Mercor is paying for.
Who fits
Chemists with hands-on bench and plant experience, not only modelling. The ad lists:
- Formulation chemistry for pyrotechnics, propellants or specialty energetic materials
- Synthesis and characterisation in a licensed or government facility
- Performance and sensitivity testing, including calorimetry and thermal stability
- Scale-up and process safety for energetic material production
- Rocket propellant development
Red-teaming experience is preferred. The work is writing-intensive, and Mercor asks for a writing sample or link (papers, technical reports, expert witness experience).
What it pays
$65–75 per task, Mercor's published band, the same as the engineering, blasting, device and investigator roles on this panel. Task length is not stated. Chemists also weighing Mercor's separate chemistry red-team panel will find the pay identical there, so choose the panel that best matches your background rather than the rate.
No payment schedule or visa eligibility appears on this listing. Ask before starting.
Before you apply
You must not use classified or export-controlled information, or anything under NDA or prepublication review. Proprietary formulations from a current or former employer fall squarely in that category. If you have such obligations, declare them; Mercor says it can scope the work around them.
Mercor warns of sustained engagement with misuse scenarios, briefs experts beforehand, and lets you step away without penalty.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Uses deep formulation and safety-testing experience that few remote roles value
- Clear line on what you may not bring to the work
- No country restriction published
Less good:
- Proprietary and controlled work, often the core of this field, is out of scope
- Per-task pay, task length unknown
- Payment terms not published
