Voice Actor: CX Agent Voice Cloning (African American)

What you'll do

Record roughly four hours of scripts (conversational, narrative, instructional) for a Mercor client, described as a leading AI research lab. Some lines need alternate takes with different emotion or emphasis. The audio is used to clone your voice for the client's internal "CX AI Agent". A second session of similar length is possible but not guaranteed.

This variant is defined by who is speaking rather than by region: the ad seeks USA-based African American voice actors with a natural African American English delivery. Speech systems have historically been trained on narrow sets of voices and perform worse for many Black American speakers, so a client deliberately recruiting for this voice is building representation into its agent. The ad, however, gives no detail on how the voice will be directed, what the scripts contain or who will hear the result, and those questions are more pointed when the voice stands in for a community rather than an accent.

Who fits

• African American voice actor based in the United States
• A natural African American English delivery
• A clear, expressive voice; acting, narration or broadcast experience is a plus only
• A near-professional home setup: good microphone, pop filter, quiet room
• Control of intonation, diction and emotional range while reading exactly what is written
• About four hours for one session, possibly another later

Preferred: TTS, audiobook, IVR or AI voice dataset work, audio editing in Audacity, Adobe Audition or Reaper, and range across conversational, corporate, energetic and calm reads.

The word the ad uses is "natural". If you code-switch between registers, the audition is the place to ask which one the client wants.

What it pays

$50–100 per hour, roughly $200 to $400 for the stated session, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. The general USA variant of the same project goes up to $150/hour; this one tops out at $100, and the ad gives no reason for the gap.

What you are licensing

Your voice, for cloning, and with it a synthetic voice that will speak in your delivery to people you will never meet. The ad limits the recordings to the client's internal CX AI agent and rules out sale, licensing or reuse for any other product, dataset or purpose. It does not name the client, say how long the clone may be used, allow for withdrawal of consent, describe any review of what the agent says in your voice, or mention payment for ongoing use. Ask for those terms in writing before you record.

Worth knowing

Good:

• A deliberate effort to put an underrepresented voice into a speech product
• Newcomers with a good voice and setup can apply
• Short, defined engagement of about four hours
• Written limit on reuse of the recordings
• Weekly Stripe or Wise payment

Less good:

• Your voice may be cloned, and the ad mentions no payment for continued use
• The ad says little about how the voice will be used: no client, no duration, no withdrawal right, no say over what the agent is made to say
• Lower ceiling ($100) than the general American variant ($150)
• About $200–400 per session, with no guarantee of a second
• Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
• H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
