Voice Actor: CX Agent Voice Cloning (Southern USA)

What you'll do

Record about four hours of scripted speech in your natural Southern accent so a Mercor client, described only as a leading AI research lab, can build a synthetic copy of your voice for its internal "CX AI Agent". The scripts range from conversational to narrative to instructional, with repeat takes where the director wants a different mood or emphasis. A second session of similar length may follow; it is not guaranteed.

The ad names Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and asks for an authentic Southern accent rather than a performed one. Regional American accents are thin in most speech datasets, which is presumably why the client is recruiting for one separately from its general American English slot. Our reading, not the ad's: a customer-facing agent that sounds local to Southern callers.

Who fits

• Native speaker of Southern American English, living in the United States, with the accent as your own
• A clear, expressive voice; voice acting, narration or broadcast work helps but is optional
• Near-professional recording conditions: a good microphone, a pop filter, a room without echo or traffic noise
• Command of intonation and diction, and the ability to stay on script without sounding read
• One free block of about four hours, with a possible repeat later

Preferred: TTS, audiobook, IVR or AI voice dataset experience, audio editing in Audacity, Adobe Audition or Reaper, and range across conversational, corporate, energetic and calm styles.

A useful self-check: record a minute of yourself reading a formal script. If your accent flattens toward general American when you read, practise keeping it. The client is paying for the Southern sound, and a neutralised read defeats the purpose.

What it pays

$50–100 per hour, so roughly $200 to $400 for the stated session length. Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise. The general USA variant of the same project goes up to $150/hour; this one tops out at $100, and the ad does not explain why.

What you are licensing

Your voice itself. The ad asks you to apply only if you accept that your voice may be cloned. Its one safeguard is a clear usage limit: the recordings are for the client's internal CX AI agent only and will not be sold, licensed or reused for any other product, dataset or purpose. It does not name the client, say how long the clone may run, say whether you can revoke consent, or mention any payment beyond the session. Get the voice rights clause in writing before recording.

Worth knowing

Good:

• Your natural regional accent is the qualification
• No prior acting experience required
• A defined, short commitment of about four hours
• Written limit on reuse: one internal agent, no resale
• Weekly Stripe or Wise payment

Less good:

• Your voice may be cloned, and nothing in the ad pays for continued use after the session
• The ad says little about how the voice will be used: no client, no duration, no withdrawal right, no word on whether callers will know the voice is synthetic
• Lower ceiling ($100) than the general American variant ($150)
• About $200–400 in total unless a second session is offered
• Home studio costs are yours
• Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
• H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
