What you'll do
You bring a psychologist's judgement to an AI training project for a micro1 customer the ad does not name. Half the work is evaluation: reading psychological case studies, assessments and AI-generated content and deciding whether they are accurate, ethical and in line with good practice. The other half is creation: writing culturally sensitive psychological scenarios and materials in Malay and English that feed the model's training data.
The Malay part is harder than it looks. The formal Bahasa Melayu of textbooks and consent forms is not the language most Malaysians use to talk about stress, which is looser and often mixed with English; a scale item that reads correctly in one register can sound stiff or clinical in the other. Several common screening tools have published Malay versions, and knowing where those translations work and where they strain is exactly the judgement the ad asks for when it talks about keeping assessments faithful "across languages and cultural contexts". Stigma, family involvement and religious framing shape what a helpful answer looks like, and a model trained only on English material will miss all three.
You also document how you evaluated each item, clearly enough for someone else to reproduce it, and work with an interdisciplinary team.
Who fits
micro1 files its list under "preferred qualifications", but the title sets the real bar: this is written for people with a doctorate.
- A PhD in Psychology, with experience in both clinical and academic settings
- Native or near-native Malay and English, including psychological terminology in both
- Strong analytical and critical thinking, with a record of ethical decision-making
- Experience developing or evaluating case studies and psychological assessments
- Exceptional writing, especially carrying nuanced concepts between Malay and English
- Comfort with remote collaboration and documentation tools
- Cultural sensitivity and adaptability in multicultural settings
No AI experience is needed. In Malaysia the usual clinical qualification is a master's in clinical psychology, so a doctorate combined with clinical and academic experience is a narrow pool: university lecturers who also see clients are the most natural fit, in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore or abroad. The ad asks for Malay, not Indonesian, and a reviewer will likely notice the difference in vocabulary.
How it compares
The sister listing, Bilingual Malay Psychiatrist, pays the same band but asks for a medical degree and centres on building psychiatric case studies and clinical annotation. micro1's broader Bilingual Mental Health Expert listing includes Malay among its 16 languages at the same band and accepts a psychology PhD or a psychiatry MD. Indonesian speakers have a separate Bilingual Indonesian Psychologist (PhD) listing.
What it pays
$100–200/hour, the band micro1 uses on its other doctoral psychology roles. The ad does not say what places you within the band, whether pay is per hour or per task, how many hours a week are on offer, or how long the project runs. Ask before you commit time.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A top-tier hourly band for clinical and research expertise
- 70 openings for a Malay-specific doctoral role
- Work that uses bilingual clinical judgement rather than generic annotation
- Remote, with no country restriction on the ad
Less good:
- The doctorate is a hard requirement, which shuts out many practising Malaysian clinical psychologists
- A 2x pay spread with no published basis for placement
- No hours, duration, pay structure or start date stated
- Mental health case material can be heavy to work through day after day
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
