What you'll do
The customer is building AI tools that help draft scientific publications, and you are the publication professional who tells it where it falls short. The work splits into five parts:
- Task authoring and review. You write realistic evaluation tasks from peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, conference posters and presentation decks.
- Structure and formatting. You judge whether AI-drafted sections meet journal and publisher requirements and publication ethics standards: ICMJE, GPP, and EQUATOR reporting guidelines such as CONSORT and STROBE.
- Scientific accuracy. You separate genuine errors in data interpretation or medical reasoning from matters of editorial taste, which is the distinction a model finds hardest.
- Data verification. You trace every publication claim back to its source: Clinical Study Reports, protocols, and tables, figures and listings.
- Structured feedback and framework refinement. You write clear rationales for each assessment and help the project leads tighten the evaluation criteria.
The data-verification step is where experience shows. Anyone can check that a discussion section reads well; checking that a subgroup claim in the abstract actually matches the TFL takes someone who has been through a submission.
Who fits
- At least five years of dedicated medical or scientific publication authoring at a sponsor, CRO, MedComms agency, or as an independent consultant
- Lead authorship or management of peer-reviewed manuscripts in reputable biomedical or clinical journals
- Strong knowledge of ICMJE, GPP3/GPP2022 and CONSORT, copyright compliance and journal submission workflows
- The ability to interpret TFLs and statistical analysis plans and turn them into publication-ready narrative
- Excellent written communication and a record of structured feedback on drafts
- An advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, MSc) in life sciences, pharmacy or medicine, or equivalent authoring depth
- Breadth across therapeutic areas and phases; oncology, immunology and rare diseases are especially valued
What it pays
$50–80/hour, micro1's published figure. It matches the Medical Communications Manager listing posted alongside it, and sits above the $30–60 Medical Writer (Pharmaceutical) listing, which focuses on regulatory documents rather than publications. For an experienced publications professional the band is on the modest side of freelance rates. No compensation structure, weekly hours or duration is stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Fifty openings
- Agency, CRO, sponsor and freelance backgrounds all count
- An advanced degree can be substituted with equivalent authoring depth
- Work that uses real publication-planning skill
Less good:
- $50–80 is below many experienced freelance publication rates
- The five-year floor is firm
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
- The tools being built target the same work you do, which some will want to weigh
