What you'll do
Fire dispatch has its own rhythm: structure fires, alarms, brush fires and hazmat calls with multi-unit responses and mutual aid, all run off protocols and run cards. This project wants that operational knowledge in a form an AI can learn from.
You take incoming emergency requests (the ad says "simulated or real-time"), judge urgency, assign resources according to established protocols, and route information from several channels at once. You follow standard checklists and dispatch scripts, and write up each scenario's response and communication flow in a structured format.
Where this listing goes further than its ambulance sibling is on the critique side. You evaluate AI-generated protocols and automated responses, point out where they would fail in a real centre, suggest improvements, and give concise feedback on how clear the AI's communications are. A dispatcher's instinct for the ambiguous radio call or the address that does not exist is the value here.
Who fits
All listed as preferred:
- Significant experience as a fire dispatcher, emergency communications specialist or equivalent
- Handling simultaneous requests via radio, phone and digital platforms
- Applying and interpreting standard emergency protocols and checklists (the ad references APCO/NENA certification)
- Clear, concise, professional writing and speech
- Fast, accurate prioritisation under pressure
- Familiarity with dispatch-centre workflows
- Experience training others or improving procedures is a plus
What it pays
$30–55/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length is stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 50 openings, flagged as high demand
- A real voice in critiquing AI dispatch output, not only producing examples
- Remote, with no country list
Less good:
- A modest band for specialist, high-pressure expertise
- The APCO/NENA reference suggests certification carries weight, unlike the ambulance listing, which says it is not required
- Nothing on hours, duration, screening or how the band is applied
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
