What you'll do
Your job is to be the native listener a speech model does not have. You play Italian clips, some recorded by people and some generated by a model, and judge how authentic they sound: pronunciation, intonation and whether the phrasing is natural. Each verdict gets a concise written justification in English so the ratings can be compared across reviewers.
Italian is often described as easy to pronounce because spelling maps closely to sound, but that is exactly why synthetic Italian can sound subtly wrong. The tells are in double consonants held too short, open and closed e and o vowels that vary by region, stress on the wrong syllable of words like "ancora", and a sentence melody that sounds read rather than spoken. A trained ear from voice work, singing or teaching is a real advantage here, which is why the ad lists music and audio engineering alongside linguistics.
You also flag ambiguities to project coordinators and contribute observations toward improving the model's Italian.
Who fits
- Native-level Italian, spoken and written
- English at B2 or above for the written assessments
- The ability to put fine differences in sound into clear words
- Strong attention to detail and clear written communication
Preferred: voice specialisation, linguistics, phonetics, or music and audio engineering; audio analysis, transcription or linguistic assessment; media, communications or teaching. No AI experience or minimum years are required.
What it pays
$30–65/hour, micro1's published band, identical to its Bengali, Dutch and Hebrew bilingual listings. The ad does not explain what places you in the band, so treat $30 as the planning figure. No hours, project length or payment schedule are published.
micro1 also has an Italian Language Expert listing (transcription, $20–36/hour) and an Italian Audio Recording Expert listing (recording on your own gear, $20–40/hour). Of the three, this evaluation role has the highest ceiling and needs no equipment.
Worth knowing
Good:
- The best-paid of micro1's three current Italian language roles at the top end
- No equipment, degree or AI experience required
- 100 openings, flagged as high demand
- Remote, with no country restriction on the listing
Less good:
- A wide band with no stated basis for placement
- Repetitive listening; consistency is the core of the job
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
