What you'll do

Mercor is recruiting Italian listeners to judge text-to-speech narration of full audiobooks in Italian as spoken in Italy. The job is to listen like a fan and annotate like an editor: when the voice skips a word, adds one, stresses the wrong syllable, reads "1848" or "S.p.A." the wrong way, or lands a sentence with a flat, robotic contour, you mark the exact span in Mercor's review tool and tag the error type.

Italian gives a TTS system plenty to trip on. Stress placement is not written down for most words (àncora versus ancòra), elision and apostrophes change how phrases run together, and regional names and dialect words in fiction are easy to get wrong. A listener who notices these without trying is exactly what the ad is asking for.

Beyond individual errors you also rate the overall listening experience: where the narration is pleasant enough to forget it is synthetic, and where it pulls you out of the book.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native Italian (Italy), and a regular audiobook listener with real opinions about narration
  • Working English, enough to write reports and talk to the team; the ad is explicit that you do not need to be bilingual
  • Some background in annotation, labelling, transcription, proofreading, linguistics or similar detail work
  • Stamina: accurate attention across long listening sessions
  • About 20 hours a week available, roughly four hours a day

Prior AI data or audio QA projects, or a background in editing, voice work or audio production, are listed as a plus.

Living in Italy is preferred, not required. The listing is open to applicants anywhere, so there is no country restriction on this page.

What it pays

$15–20 per hour, Mercor's published range. That matches the other European-language versions of this audiobook project (German, French, Dutch and both Portuguese variants all show the same band); only the US English version pays more, at $20–25. The ad does not say what places you within the band.

Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise. Mercor states it cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Low barrier: no degree, no minimum years, and working rather than fluent English is enough
  • The work is genuinely suited to people who already spend hours with audiobooks
  • A steady target of around 20 hours a week, on your own schedule
  • Weekly payment, stated in the ad

Less good:

  • $15–20 is modest for work that needs native-level ear training, and well below what Mercor pays for its Italian Sonic audit work
  • Long listening sessions are tiring; the error log only has value if you stay sharp in hour four
  • Independent contractor terms: projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • The client, the review tool and the size of the project are not disclosed

Before you apply

Listen critically to a few minutes of any Italian TTS voice first. If you find yourself noticing wrong stress or mangled numbers on your own, you will likely do well on this. If it all sounds fine to you, the calibration will be hard going.
