What you'll do

This is transcription with a quality-control streak. You transcribe Italian audio (and English when a project calls for it), then review your own transcripts for completeness and faithful representation of what was said, and annotate the audio data to the specification. The brief also asks you to flag recordings that are unclear or poor quality and report the transcription problems they cause, rather than guessing your way through them.

Spoken Italian gives a transcriber real decisions to make: regional pronunciations that change how a word sounds without changing how it is spelled, dialect words dropped into standard Italian, truncated forms in fast speech ("sto" for "questo"), and false starts. The ad asks you to identify and annotate linguistic subtleties and audio ambiguities, so these calls are part of the work.

You coordinate with project coordinators on requirements, keep data confidential, and deliver against milestones.

Who fits

  • Native-level Italian, with strong comprehension of spoken and written language
  • Professional audio transcription experience, ideally on linguistic or AI-related projects
  • Exceptional attention to detail and familiarity with transcription tools and best practice
  • The ability to spot and annotate linguistic subtleties and ambiguous audio
  • Proactive communication and independent working

AI training data experience is a plus but not required. The ad does not state an English level, though some audio may be in English.

What it pays

$20–36/hour, micro1's published band, the same as its French, German, Hindi, Japanese and Korean Language Expert roles posted in the same week. micro1's Italian Bilingual Expert role pays more ($30–65/hour) for rating speech rather than transcribing it, so if your English is B2 or better, compare both. The ad does not state hours, project length or what determines placement.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Judgement calls on bad audio are part of the brief, not penalised
  • 15 openings on a recently posted listing
  • No AI experience required
  • Remote, with no country restriction on the listing

Less good:

  • Pays less than micro1's Italian evaluation role
  • Professional transcription experience is expected
  • No hours, duration or start date published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal about six days before we confirmed it open on 24 September 2026. The $20–36/hour band, 15 openings and the qualifications above are its published text; the ad's opening line calls the role "Italian Transcription Experts". The customer is not named. See micro1.
