Skills

  • audio transcription
  • transcript review
  • data annotation
  • attention to detail

What you'll do

You transcribe Japanese audio, capturing context, speaker nuance and linguistic detail along with the words, and you review and validate transcripts that others (people or machines) have produced, fixing errors, inconsistencies and ambiguities. Audio files and transcripts then get metadata and contextual notes as the project requires.

Japanese transcription is a writing-system problem as much as a listening one. The same spoken word can be written in kanji, hiragana or katakana, homophones are everywhere, and a speech recogniser has to guess which kanji a speaker meant from context alone. Getting that right, consistently, to a project's conventions, is where a native transcriber earns their rate. The listing also invites you to contribute cultural insight, which suggests the work goes beyond verbatim text into how the model understands Japanese in context.

You work with project managers and other experts to keep deliverables consistent across the team.

Who fits

  • Native-level Japanese, spoken and written
  • Professional experience in transcription, linguistic review, localisation or related work (strongly encouraged)
  • Familiarity with transcription conventions, audio review workflows, annotation tools or speech data projects (preferred)
  • A good ear for subtle differences in language, pronunciation and context
  • Enough English to follow project instructions and handle occasional English content
  • Organised, dependable delivery

Previous AI training or data annotation work is a plus. No AI experience is required.

What it pays

$20–36/hour, micro1's published band, identical to the French, German, Hindi, Italian and Korean Language Expert roles posted in the same week. The ad does not state hours, project length or what decides placement.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The English bar is modest: enough to follow instructions
  • Cultural and linguistic insight is invited alongside the transcription
  • 15 openings on a recently posted listing
  • Remote, with no country restriction on the listing

Less good:

  • The rate is modest by Japanese professional transcription standards
  • Script and style conventions are not published up front
  • No hours, duration or start date published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
