What you'll do
You act as the senior engineer checking an AI's homework. The model is given advanced mechanical engineering problems (design questions, structural and thermal analysis, R&D scenarios, and more theoretical questions), and you solve them yourself and assess whether its answers are technically correct and of professional quality.
The ad names the toolkit you are expected to reason with: FEA, statics and dynamics, thermodynamics and vibration analysis. In practice that means spotting when a model has used the wrong boundary condition, skipped a failure mode, or produced a stress figure that no hand calculation would support. You then explain, in writing and sometimes verbally, what went wrong and why, so the feedback can be used to improve how the model reasons.
Unlike micro1's other mechanical listing, there is no mention of scripting simulations in Python or using coding agents. This is judgment and explanation work, done remotely alongside a distributed team of other experts.
Who fits
- An MS or PhD in mechanical engineering, or a BS in mechanical engineering with 8+ years of relevant industry experience
- At least 5 years hands-on in mechanical design, analysis or R&D
- Expert statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, FEA and vibration or structural analysis
- Analysis of complex systems by finite element methods, hand calculations and experimental validation
- Familiarity with ASME BPVC and other ASME codes, and design-for-reliability practice
- Professional English with excellent written and verbal communication
A plus: ANSYS, Abaqus or Nastran, CAD platforms, or product R&D in manufacturing.
The ad strongly prefers evidence that you can author rigorous problems: olympiad problem committees, textbook problem sets or solutions manuals, NCEES or qualifying-exam item writing, ASME codes and standards committees, top placements or team leadership in Formula SAE/Formula Student, ASME design competitions, NASA RASC-AL or DARPA challenges, best-paper awards at ASME IMECE, IDETC or Turbo Expo, a JMPS publication, ASME medals or Fellow status, or early-career awards such as NSF CAREER. If you have any of these, put them first.
What it pays
$60–100/hour is the published band, but compensation is output-based: you are paid per task that meets the project specifications, with a weekly minimum number of submissions that the ad does not quantify. Weekly hours and project length are not stated.
How it differs from the other Mechanical Engineering Expert listing
micro1's other Mechanical Engineering Expert listing pays $80–150/hour and is a coding-heavy project: scripting geometry, meshes and solver runs in Python with open-source tools and coding agents, with a lower entry bar (BS plus 1–2 years). This posting is a separate project centred on evaluating AI answers, with a lower band, a much higher experience bar (BS plus 8+ years, or a graduate degree, and 5+ years hands-on), 25 openings rather than 100, and a strong preference for problem-authoring credentials.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No coding required, so it suits analysts and designers who work in GUIs
- Credentials like committee service or competition leadership are valued directly
- 25 openings, flagged high demand
- Fully remote with no country restriction
Less good:
- Per-task pay with an unquantified weekly minimum; rejected tasks are unpaid
- A high experience bar for a band that tops out at $100
- No weekly hours or project length stated
- Fast start expected: roles fill in about 48 hours, first tasks due 24–48 hours after onboarding
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
