What you'll do

This is the integration and test member of a four-listing Mercor family for hardware engineers, all posted together for "an advanced engineering and AI research initiative with a leading technology organization". Your subject is what happens when subsystems meet: interfaces, verification and validation, qualification, reliability and the failures that only show up on a real bench or production line.

Per the ad, you review system requirements, interface definitions, integration plans, verification strategies, test procedures, qualification approaches, reliability analyses and manufacturing test workflows, and judge whether the proposed solutions are technically correct and would actually work. You diagnose integration failures down to root cause, interface issue, design deficiency or test coverage gap. You also develop or review the engineering problems themselves, with reference solutions, test cases, verification criteria and failure analyses.

That last part is the AI training core: the lab wants models that reason about system-level hardware problems the way an experienced integration engineer does, and the problems and reference answers are what teach and test that.

Who qualifies

  • 5+ years in systems, integration, reliability or test engineering, with at least 3 recent years hands-on (the ad is explicit: not solely program or people management)
  • Having been the responsible engineer for a complex physical system, from requirements and interfaces through integration, qualification, production readiness and field support
  • Deep expertise in at least one of: systems engineering and requirements/V&V; hardware integration and test; reliability engineering and failure analysis; manufacturing or production test
  • Working command of traceability, interface management, test planning, FMEA/FMECA, fault isolation, environmental testing, design-for-test and manufacturing yield
  • Hands-on lab work: instrumentation, data acquisition, automated test infrastructure, environmental chambers, structured failure analysis

Experience at a hardware company is strongly preferred. The ad names dozens of examples across aerospace and defence, space, automotive and EV, semiconductors, consumer electronics, drones and robotics, and industrial, energy and medical devices, and says comparable organisations count equally.

Application involves a resume, Mercor's domain expert interview, a work authorisation step and a "Hardware Engineering SME" screening shared by all four listings in the family.

What it pays

$100–120 per hour, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. That is well above Mercor's earlier single-discipline hardware listings, such as the Mechanical Engineering Expert and Electrical Engineering Expert roles at $70–80. Hours and project length are not stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A rare AI training listing aimed squarely at integration, reliability and test engineers rather than designers
  • Strong rate, weekly payment
  • No country restriction stated
  • The ad says the work will not involve access to confidential information from any employer, which matters for engineers still in industry

Less good:

  • The bar is real: responsible-engineer experience, not adjacent exposure
  • Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates
  • No hours, volume or duration published; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • Independent contractor: no benefits, your own tax to manage
