What you'll do

This is the mechanical member of a four-listing Mercor hardware family. The ad names four backgrounds: structural and stress, thermal, mechanical design, and dynamics and controls.

Per the ad, you review mechanical designs, engineering analyses, simulation results, test methods and troubleshooting approaches, and decide whether they would hold up on real hardware. The ad is specific about what to catch: incorrect assumptions, unrealistic boundary conditions, design deficiencies, failure modes and reliability risks. In practice that means the FEA with the wrong constraints, the thermal model that ignores a contact resistance, the margin that vanishes once fatigue is counted. You also develop or review engineering problems with reference solutions and evaluation criteria.

The aim is models that reason about physical design the way a senior mechanical engineer does.

Who qualifies

  • 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering, with at least 3 recent years hands-on in hardware development, analysis, test or troubleshooting (not solely program or people management)
  • Having been the responsible engineer for real hardware, from requirements and analysis through design, prototyping, test, qualification and manufacturing readiness
  • Deep expertise in at least one of: structural/stress analysis and FEA; thermal analysis and thermal management; mechanical design and product development; dynamics, vibration, mechanisms and controls
  • A practical command of materials, loads and boundary conditions, structural margins, fatigue, thermal limits, tolerances and GD&T, component selection and manufacturability
  • Hands-on work with CAD/CAE, FEA, CFD or thermal simulation, test instrumentation and data acquisition

Hardware-company experience is strongly preferred, with the same long list of example employers across aerospace, space, automotive, semiconductors, consumer electronics, robotics and medical devices as its siblings.

Application involves a resume, Mercor's domain expert interview, a work authorisation step and the "Hardware Engineering SME" screening shared across the family.

What it pays

$100–120 per hour, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. Compare Mercor's existing Mechanical Engineering Expert listing at $70–80 and its Mechanical Engineer listing at $60–90: this family asks for more demonstrated hands-on ownership and pays roughly $30–40 an hour more for it. Hours and duration are not stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The best-paid mechanical listing on Mercor's board when we read it
  • Covers analysts (stress, thermal) as well as designers, which many CAD-focused listings do not
  • Weekly payment, no country restriction stated
  • No access to any employer's confidential information, per the ad

Less good:

  • Responsible-engineer experience on real hardware is required, not simulation-only work
  • Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates
  • No hours, volume or duration published; projects can end early
  • Independent contractor: no benefits, your own tax to manage
