What you'll do
This is the inpatient end of medical coding, turned into AI training data. You work through full inpatient records (admission notes, progress notes, operative reports, consults, lab and imaging results, discharge summaries) and code them the way a hospital coder would, except that the output feeds a dataset rather than a claim.
The core of each record:
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes from the documentation
- Pick the principal diagnosis, sequence the secondaries correctly and set Present on Admission indicators
- Validate the MS-DRG, including whether the CCs and MCCs are supported
- Apply inpatient conventions: UHDDS definitions, the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and AHA Coding Clinic guidance
- Spot hospital-acquired conditions and patient safety indicators
On top of that you explain your reasoning on complex cases and give feedback on the coding guidelines, which is where the model learns how an experienced coder handles the ambiguous record rather than the routine one. You also work with project stakeholders, in writing and on calls, to resolve documentation gaps.
Who fits
- An active AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or AAPC Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) credential
- Deep knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and MS-DRG methodology, with hands-on inpatient coding experience
- Coding across varied inpatient settings: acute care, teaching hospitals, specialty units, surgery, trauma, oncology, cardiology, transplant
- Comfort with every kind of clinical documentation and the hard cases that come with it
- Clear written and verbal communication and close attention to detail
- Access to current ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets, the Official Coding Guidelines and an MS-DRG grouper tool
The ad lists all of these as preferred rather than required, but the work itself (PCS coding and DRG validation) is not something you can do without inpatient training. If you hold a CPC and code outpatient, this is not your listing. No prior AI experience is needed.
The grouper requirement is easy to miss: you are expected to bring your own access to current code sets and DRG tools.
What it pays
$50–70/hour, micro1's published band. That is well above micro1's outpatient coding listings, which reflects how much scarcer inpatient credentials and DRG skills are. For comparison, micro1's general Medical Coder listing pays $25–40/hour for CPC-level outpatient work. No weekly hours, duration or pay structure is published.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Strong rate for remote coding work
- 100 openings, flagged high demand
- Complex-case feedback makes this more than production coding
- No country restriction stated
Less good:
- You supply your own code sets and grouper access
- Inpatient-only: outpatient coders will struggle with the scope
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage
- The client is not named
