What you'll do
Unlike most micro1 listings, this is an employee research role on micro1's own team, not a contract on a customer project. The job is to decide how AI performance on financial work gets measured.
That means designing and owning evaluation frameworks for AI agents working in finance: benchmark suites, scoring methods, quality rubrics and research-grade protocols. You build and curate the datasets, test cases and benchmark environments that stand in for real enterprise finance problems, analyse where models fail and why, and turn that into research priorities. Output includes internal research findings, technical reports and best practices, and the ad expects you to help set research standards for the field.
The distinction from the contract roles is ownership. Contributors on micro1's hourly finance listings grade against rubrics; this role writes the rubrics and decides what the benchmark is.
Who fits
- An advanced degree in finance, economics, financial engineering, quantitative finance or a related field; a PhD is strongly preferred, with an MBA, CFA or equivalent expertise also considered
- Deep domain expertise in at least one of: investment research, capital markets, risk management, corporate finance, accounting or financial analysis
- A record of rigorous research, analytical methodology or evaluation-framework design in finance or a quantitative field
- The ability to turn a vague real-world finance problem into a measurable research question
- Strong writing, including research reports or technical documentation
- Experience in cross-functional teams spanning research, engineering and product
Nice to have
- Experience evaluating or benchmarking large language models, AI agents or reasoning systems
- Familiarity with agentic workflows, synthetic data generation or alignment techniques
- A publication record, and fluency with Python, SQL or statistical tooling
- Experience designing industry benchmarks or assessment standards
What it pays
The ad's compensation notice states a national base salary range of $200,000–250,000 for this full-time position, with equity for all employees and possible performance bonuses. Benefits listed: up to 100% reimbursement of health-insurance premiums, paid time off and a 401(k) with company match.
Two other figures appear on micro1's board for this post and should not be relied on. The listing card shows $400,000–800,000/year, which may be a total-compensation figure but is not explained anywhere in the ad text. The detail panel shows $6–8/hr, which is plainly a display error. The base salary above is the only figure the ad itself spells out, so it is the one used here; confirm total compensation during the process.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A salaried research role with equity and benefits, rare among AI-training listings
- Ownership of evaluation design rather than task-level grading
- Remote-first, and CFA or MBA holders are considered, not only PhDs
Less good:
- One opening
- The pay shown on micro1's board is inconsistent across three figures
- The 401(k) and national pay range imply a US employment setup, but the ad does not state a country requirement; confirm if you are outside the US
- The ad notes that AI tools are used in candidate screening alongside human review
