What you'll do
You work on site in a San Francisco lab with a handheld UMI gripper, a hand-held version of a robot's gripper that records what you do with it. You use it to repeat manipulation tasks many times: picking things up, opening containers, simple household actions, across a variety of objects and set-ups. Robots then learn from the recorded demonstrations.
Each attempt follows written protocols exactly. Between attempts you reset the scene and check the data submission before moving on. When something goes wrong (the hardware misbehaves, an instruction is unclear, a recording is compromised) you report it to the project lead, and you note observations and process ideas as you go.
The ad is candid that this means long stretches of repetitive physical work with sustained attention.
Who fits
- Fine motor skills, dexterity and precise handling of objects
- Reliable and punctual, with a track record to show it in work, study or gig jobs
- Comfortable with repetitive physical tasks and able to stay focused over long sessions
- Follows step-by-step instructions without deviating
- Picks up simple hardware quickly and can fix minor issues
- Clear written and spoken communication for flagging problems
Warehouse, operations, gaming, gig work and student project backgrounds are all valued. No robotics or AI experience is required.
What it pays
$10–30/hour, micro1's published figure. That is a 3x spread with nothing published about what decides your rate, and the bottom of the band is low for San Francisco. Hours, shifts and project length are not stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No experience required
- Hands-on with real robot-learning hardware, which is a rare entry point into robotics
- A higher ceiling than micro1's similar Los Angeles role
- 10 openings, flagged as high demand
Less good:
- $10 at the bottom is well below living costs in San Francisco
- Physically demanding, repetitive work
- On site only, so commuting time and cost are yours
- No schedule, hours or duration published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
