  • following protocols
  • robotics

What you'll do

You are the demonstration that a robot learns from. In a San Francisco lab you hold a UMI gripper (a handheld device that records a grasp the way a robot hand would perform it) and repeat simple household actions over and over: picking things up, opening containers, moving objects, across a changing set of items and room setups.

Each attempt follows a written protocol exactly, because consistency is what makes the data usable. Between attempts you reset the scene, check that the recording captured properly, and flag anything wrong (a hardware glitch, an unclear instruction, a spoiled take) to the project lead. You also write up observations and suggest process fixes as you spot them.

Expect long stretches of the same motion with full attention.

Who fits

  • Good dexterity and precise handling of objects
  • Reliability and punctuality, shown in any prior job, study or gig work
  • Comfort with repetitive physical tasks and the stamina to stay focused through long sessions
  • The patience to follow step-by-step instructions without improvising
  • Quick to pick up basic hardware interfaces and sort out minor glitches
  • Clear communication when something needs flagging

Warehouse, operations, gaming, gig work and student project backgrounds are all named as relevant. No robotics or AI experience is required.

What it pays

$10–20/hour, micro1's published band, the same as its Los Angeles Robot Wrangler role. For San Francisco that is low; the bottom of the band is under the city's employee minimum wage, so ask where you would be placed before committing. The "internship" in the title suggests the band reflects an entry-level framing, but the ad lists the role type as contractor.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Genuinely no experience required
  • Direct exposure to how robot learning data is collected, a useful line on a CV for robotics or ML roles
  • Ten openings

Less good:

  • Low pay for San Francisco, with no stated hours or shift pattern
  • Onsite only; commuting cost and time come out of the rate
  • Repetitive and physically tiring
  • No duration stated, and "internship" is not defined (no mention of mentoring, credit or conversion)
