What you'll do

Anyone who has written a Weekly Activity Report or a SITREP knows the format has rules that are rarely written down. This project wants those rules captured. You produce realistic DoD staff writing tasks: the prompt, the input material a staffer would be working from, and a golden response that shows what good looks like for WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, performance reports and similar products.

You then write the grading guidelines used to score AI-generated versions of the same documents on accuracy, tone and compliance with DoD conventions. Part of the job is building authentic report artifacts across operational and administrative scenarios, and helping design test material for summarising and reporting tasks. Expect feedback rounds where prompts, answers and rubrics are revised as the model's performance becomes clearer.

Who fits

  • A former federal contributor to the Department of Defense (styled in the ad as the Department of War) with at least three years of relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience producing WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries and comparable formats
  • Service in one of the six U.S. military branches; varied roles and units are preferred
  • Clear, audience-appropriate writing and close attention to detail
  • Familiarity with back-office products: PowerPoint briefings, memos, Excel summaries
  • US-based, with a working knowledge of federal compliance, reporting requirements and DoD terminology

No AI experience is required.

What it pays

$40–80/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure or weekly hours are stated. For veterans with staff experience this is a reasonable side rate for work that uses a skill most civilian employers do not value directly.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A rare listing that pays for military staff writing experience specifically
  • Twenty openings, posted four days before we read it
  • Rubric and golden-answer authoring is durable, substantive work
  • Remote

Less good:

  • US only
  • Three years of DoD contribution and a military branch background are both asked for, which narrows the pool
  • No hours, duration or pay structure published
  • Contractor terms, no benefits; the customer is not named
