What you'll do

This is hands-on mechanical CAD work, done in FreeCAD, where the output becomes training material for AI systems learning to model and reason about parts. You create, modify and validate parametric models to a specification, build assemblies with sensible component integration, and apply GD&T and design-for-manufacturing thinking so the result is something a shop could actually make.

Each model comes with drawings. You produce technical drawings and documentation clean enough for engineering review, then QA models and drawings (your own and others') to find and explain problems. You also give feedback on accuracy and design intent, which is where an engineer's judgment matters more than CAD speed.

Python scripting for CAD automation is part of the scope, marked highly preferred but not mandatory.

Who fits

  • Two or more years in mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering or a related field, with a focus on parametric modelling
  • Advanced FreeCAD skills, or equivalent depth in another parametric platform
  • Solid mechanical design fundamentals, including GD&T and DFM
  • A track record of complete drawing packages for manufacture and assembly
  • Experience checking models for integrity and spec compliance

No prior AI experience is required.

Why FreeCAD matters here

Most working mechanical engineers live in SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or Fusion. The ad does accept equivalent parametric platforms, but the tasks are specified in FreeCAD, and its workbench model, constraint solver and topological naming quirks differ enough that someone fluent elsewhere should budget time to adjust. Open-source CAD users and engineers who already script FreeCAD in Python are the natural fit.

What it pays

$40–100/hour, micro1's published band, with 2.5x between floor and ceiling and no stated basis for placement. Plan around $40 until you have an offer. The ad publishes no compensation structure, weekly hours or project length.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Real engineering work in your own discipline, not generic rating
  • Two-year experience bar is accessible for a "senior" title
  • 50 openings
  • Python CAD automation skills are rewarded
  • Fully remote with no country restriction stated

Less good:

  • Wide band with no published basis for placement
  • FreeCAD specifically, which few commercial engineers use day to day
  • No hours, duration or pay mechanism stated
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage
