What you'll do
The common thread is drawings. The project is about teaching AI to comprehend technical drawings and field plans, and you supply the reading an experienced tradesperson brings to them.
In practice that means several quite different documents. On the shop side, you review machining drawings and GD&T callouts, and comment on CNC setup and programming documentation, including the common problems and how they get fixed. On the field side, you evaluate construction plan sheets for missing information or unclear detail, interpret drilling and mine plans for accuracy and feasibility, and review fire and building plans against applicable US codes. Each review ends in a precise written or spoken explanation.
It is unusual for one listing to reach from a CNC shop floor to a mine plan and a fire marshal's desk. Read it as a pool: the ad names machinists, superintendents, drilling engineers, mine planners, cabinetmakers and fire officers, so you are probably expected to bring depth in one of these areas rather than all.
Who fits
- Ten or more years as a master machinist, construction superintendent, drilling engineer, mine planner, cabinetmaker or fire officer, with a record of interpreting drawings and field plans
- A thorough grasp of US construction, fire or mining codes
- CNC programming, machining process and GD&T expertise (for the shop side)
- Experience reviewing fire and building plans with a safety and regulatory eye (for that side)
- The ability to explain a complex shop or field situation clearly in writing and aloud
- Comfort working independently and remotely
No AI experience is required. The ten-year bar is the highest of micro1's current industrial listings, where most ask for eight.
What it pays
$55–100/hour, micro1's published band. That floor is the lowest among its current run of industrial expert roles, which otherwise start at $60 to $80. No pay mechanics, hours or duration are published, so plan around the bottom of the band.
For comparison, micro1 also lists a CNC Machinist role at $80–120/hour and a Manufacturing Specialist (Fusion360 CAM) at $60–100/hour. If your background is purely machining, those are worth reading side by side with this one.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 20 openings, flagged as high demand
- Cabinetmakers and fire officers are named explicitly, trades that rarely see AI training work
- Remote, with US residence a preference rather than a rule
- No certification is listed as required
Less good:
- The lowest floor and the highest experience bar in micro1's current industrial set
- A very broad scope with no word on which specialisms carry most of the work
- Code knowledge is US-specific, so non-US applicants will be weaker on the plan review side
- Pay mechanics, hours and project length are not stated
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
