What you'll do
Despite the title, the project software is FreeCAD. micro1 says it recruits on SolidWorks (or similar parametric CAD) experience because it transfers, and that prior FreeCAD use is ideal. Worth knowing before you apply if you have never touched it.
The work is modelling from a written brief. You create fully parametric parts and assemblies with clean feature trees and proper constraints, edit existing models to meet new requirements (logging every change), and audit models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application and manufacturability. DFM knowledge across injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC machining and casting or forging is applied throughout. The output is structured CAD data that captures design intent clearly enough for AI training.
The feature tree matters most here: a model that looks right but breaks when a dimension changes is what this project is trying to teach against.
Who fits
- At least four years of hands-on parametric CAD for editing tasks, and ten or more years for creating complex assemblies (SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360 or Inventor)
- Practical GD&T to ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard
- Experience supporting at least two manufacturing methods among injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC and casting or forging
- Current, active work in mechanical or industrial CAD
- Clear written and spoken project documentation
- Reverse engineering (scan-to-CAD, point clouds) is a significant advantage; assembly modelling and CAD scripting (Python, iLogic, VBA) are pluses
No AI experience is required.
What it pays
$40–100/hour, micro1's published band. The two experience thresholds in the ad (four years for editing, ten for creation) suggest the band may track which kind of task you are cleared for, but the ad does not say so. No compensation structure or hours are stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Forty openings
- Pays for real design craft: feature trees, constraints, DFM
- Scripting and reverse engineering skills are recognised
- Remote, no country restriction stated
Less good:
- You will be working in FreeCAD, which feels rough if you are used to SolidWorks
- Ten years for complex assembly creation is a high bar
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement, no benefits
