What you'll do
The task is the same as on micro1's Accountant (CPA/CA) listing; what differs is the title and the pay. An AI system is producing formal translations of US sales and use tax statutes, and you define and test what a correct translation must contain.
For each statutory section (mostly state law, sometimes federal) you:
- Write a checklist of discrete requirements from the statute alone, before looking at the AI's output
- Rate each requirement critical, secondary or minor by its real statutory weight
- Score the AI's translation pass/fail against that checklist, looking hard at thresholds, AND/OR logic, defined terms and exceptions
- For every failed criterion, write a self-contained test scenario with explicit facts, dates, amounts and the expected outcome
- Flag genuine ambiguities in the statute rather than resolving them silently
The standard you are held to is reproducibility: another reviewer reading your criteria should reach your conclusion. For a US-based SALT practitioner, this is close to the analysis you do when advising on a nexus or taxability question, written down more rigorously.
Who qualifies
- An active CPA licence, a Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a US tax attorney
- The ability to read and interpret tax statutes and regulations, beyond return preparation
- Comfort with conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions and defined terms
- Precise writing and attention to "except for" clauses
- Comfort working in a digital review interface
Sales and use tax or state and local tax statutory experience is strongly preferred. Multi-state experience, Enrolled Agent status or federal tax experience, and prior review of AI tax content are pluses. No AI experience is needed.
What it pays
$65–70/hour, published by micro1. That is more than double the $20–30 on the identically described Accountant (CPA/CA) listing. The title is the only difference in the text: this one says "U.S based", but its location line reads only "Remote", with no formal country restriction. If you are in the US, apply here rather than to the lower-paid listing.
No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length is stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Same work as its sibling at more than double the rate
- A tight $5 band, so the offer is predictable
- Statutory analysis rather than return preparation
- Rubric-first review is sound, transferable practice
Less good:
- $65–70 is still below typical billing rates for CPA-level SALT advice
- The US basis is in the title only; the ad does not say how it is checked
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contract engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
- The customer is not named
About this listing
Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal and read on 24 September 2026. The $65–70/hour band, ten openings, credential requirements and scope are its own published text. The location line says only "Remote", so no country list is set here even though the title names the US. Payment terms and schedule are not published on the listing. See micro1.
