How it works

iMerit is an AI data company headquartered in San Jose, California, backed by investors including Khosla Ventures, Omidyar Network and British International Investment. It has been doing annotation work for more than a decade and says it has more than 5,000 employees. Anyone searching for iMerit jobs will find two quite different things, then. Employee roles go through its careers listing, and contract work for specialists goes through iMerit Scholars, which it launched in July 2025 as an invitation-led network of experts for generative AI training.

Scholars recruits across professional fields (computer science, engineering, finance, healthcare and law), academic ones from the humanities to the formal sciences, and creative ones including visual design, audio and speech, music and creative writing. Current roles ask for an MA, MSc or PhD depending on the domain. iMerit's knowledge base describes the path in stages: you sign up, go through a selection process that may include online assessments, interviews or practice work, then onboarding, where it collects your details and runs background checks. Approval makes you eligible, but the signal that you actually have work is a task assignment with a Statement of Work attached, which sets your start date. Work is managed in the Worksuite platform, where you also submit timesheets. Projects run from a few days to long-term contracts, in small teams led by project managers and domain experts.

iMerit publishes unusually specific advice on fake offers. Genuine contact comes only from @imerit.net or @imeritconsultant.net addresses; iMerit never charges registration, training or background-check fees; and a first approach over WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook is a red flag.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Payment timing is written down: iMerit commits to paying within 21 days of timesheet approval, which is more than many platforms publish
  • The Statement of Work model means a confirmed project has a defined start and scope before you begin, rather than a queue you may or may not find tasks in
  • The expert fields are broad, so the programme suits specialists outside software, including health and medicine and writing and education

Less good:

  • Payment is by direct bank transfer only and in US dollars only, without exceptions, so a bank that cannot receive foreign currency is a problem
  • iMerit publishes no rates for Scholars; pay is set per project in the Statement of Work
  • Independent reports are thin but negative. iMerit's Trustpilot page held ten reviews when we checked, all one-star, describing unpaid or underpaid work, weeks of silence after onboarding with no access to tasks, and managers giving feedback in a demeaning way
  • Contractor reviews on Glassdoor include complaints of payments arriving a week or more late and of HR going unresponsive after onboarding

About this page

Facts above come from the iMerit Scholars site at join-scholars.imerit.net, the Scholars knowledge base (its payments, onboarding and project verification pages), iMerit's careers page and its July 2025 Scholars announcement, last checked 29 September 2026. iMerit publishes no country list and no platform-wide rate, so those fields are empty. Worker reports are attributed to Trustpilot and Glassdoor in the sentences that make them. For comparison with other expert programmes, see Mercor and Outlier.
