What is rl environment?
A task setup, such as a coding sandbox or a simulated website, where a model attempts work and is scored automatically. Experts are hired to design tasks and grading rules for them.
An RL environment is a setup where an AI model attempts a task and receives an automatic score, such as a coding sandbox where its fix either passes the tests or does not, or a simulated website where it has to complete a purchase. The score is the reinforcement learning signal that trains the model.
Why people are needed
The model can practise thousands of times, but someone has to design each task, decide what success means and write the checks that grade it. A task with a loophole teaches the model to exploit the loophole instead of doing the work.
What the work looks like
RL environment roles ask for realistic tasks in your field plus a reliable grader: unit tests for a software task, an expected spreadsheet output for a finance task, a set of checks for a data analysis. Software engineers are the largest group hired, followed by data scientists and finance professionals. See open Software & IT roles.
Example
A task asks the model to fix a failing date-parsing function in a real open source repository. The grader runs the project's own test suite plus three new tests that catch the obvious wrong fix.
