Transcription jobs for AI: pay and accuracy standards

How-to · Today

Transcription for AI pays by the hour on some platforms and by the audio minute on others, and the two are hard to compare. Published rates from micro1, Mercor, Rev and TranscribeMe, what accuracy standard the work is sold against, and how to turn a per-minute rate into an hourly one.

Two ways AI transcription jobs pay

AI transcription jobs pay in one of two ways, and the difference decides what you earn. The AI training platforms on this site quote an hourly rate. Transcription services such as Rev and TranscribeMe quote per minute or per hour of audio, which is a different thing.

Hourly first. In October 2026 this site listed 15 audio transcription roles from micro1, all at junior level, paying $8 to $35 an hour. Language drove the spread: Gujarati paid $8 to $12, Danish $24 to $30 and Norwegian $20 to $35. Mercor's Sonic Audit family, which audits other people's transcripts, paid $18 to $41.50. Our guide to audio and voice AI jobs covers the wider field.

Per audio, the published rates are these:

PlatformPublished rateSource
Rev, transcriptionist$0.40 to $1.10 per audio/video minuteRev freelancers
Rev, legal transcriptionist$0.55 to $2.00+ per audio/video minuteSame page
TranscribeMefrom $15 to $22 per audio hourTranscribeMe jobs

Rev says it pays weekly via PayPal and, at the time of writing, has a waitlist "due to high application volume". TranscribeMe says average monthly earnings are $250, with a top monthly figure of $2,200, and that the work comes as short 2 to 4 minute clips.

Turning a per-minute rate into an hourly one

You are paid for minutes of audio, not minutes at the keyboard. A clean single speaker goes quickly. A noisy clip with crosstalk, plus timestamps and speaker labels, can take several times its length once you count replays and proofreading.

So time yourself. Transcribe a sample clip that resembles the project's audio, note the minutes worked, and divide. At Rev's $0.40 floor, an audio minute that takes you four minutes pays $6 an hour; the same minute at the $1.10 top rate pays $16.50. Compare that, not the headline, with an hourly listing.

The accuracy standard

Rev sells human transcripts to customers as "99%+ accurate" on its pricing page, at $1.99 a minute. That promise is made to customers. Rev does not publish a numeric threshold for freelancers on its public pages, and TranscribeMe does not either.

What Rev's freelancer help centre does spell out is the habit list: listen for the unclear parts, research unfamiliar names and terms, proofread before you submit, and follow the style guide for the service line. Style decides a lot. Rev offers customers a verbatim option that captures "every word, filler, and nonverbal", so whether "um" belongs in the transcript depends on the job, not on your preference.

Before you take one

  1. Find out whether the pay is per hour worked or per audio minute.
  2. Time a sample clip and work out your real rate.
  3. Read the style guide before your first file; that is what you are graded on.

Questions

How much do AI transcription jobs pay?
On this site in October 2026, micro1's audio transcription listings paid between $8 and $35 an hour depending on language. Rev publishes $0.40 to $1.10 per audio or video minute for general transcriptionists, and TranscribeMe says earnings start at $15 to $22 per audio hour.
What accuracy do transcription platforms expect?
Rev guarantees its customers 99% or better accuracy on human transcripts, which tells you the standard the work is sold against. Neither Rev nor TranscribeMe publishes a numeric accuracy threshold for freelancers on its public pages.
Is per audio minute pay better than hourly pay?
Only if you transcribe fast enough. You are paid for minutes of audio, not minutes of work, and difficult audio takes several times its own length to transcribe. Time yourself on a sample clip before you compare.
