The SuperAnnotate AI interview on SME Careers: what happens, retakes, exams and bootcamp
Interview prep · 1 week ago
SuperAnnotate hires experts through SME Careers, where most roles start with a recorded AI video interview of about 15 minutes. You get one retake at most, grading takes 1–2 business days, and an exam, a recruiter call and a paid bootcamp may follow. This guide covers what SME's help centre says and what reviewers report.
Why this matters
If you want expert AI training work through SuperAnnotate, you apply through SME Careers, and most roles there start with the same gate: a recorded AI video interview of about 15 minutes. You get one attempt plus, at most, one retake per job. Passing it is not the end either. Depending on the role, a qualification exam, a profile review, a call with a human recruiter and a paid bootcamp can follow before any production work.
SME Careers documents this better than most platforms, in a help centre at docs.sme.careers. This guide is built on those pages, with worker reports kept apart and labelled.
For the general playbook, read five things that decide an AI interview. For pay, payouts and time tracking, see the SuperAnnotate company page.
How SME Careers relates to SuperAnnotate
The official sources line up like this:
- SuperAnnotate points experts there. SuperAnnotate's AI data services page describes "The SuperAnnotate Expert Network", and its "Apply to join as an expert" button links to sme.careers.
- SME Careers carries the SuperAnnotate name. Its site is titled "SME Careers by Superannotate", and its footer describes SuperAnnotate as "the expert-centric data platform trusted by leading AI companies" before describing SME Careers as the place that connects experts with opportunities.
- The operator is a separately named company. The same footer reads "SME Solutions Inc.", and the SME Careers privacy policy says it explains "how SME Solutions processes personal data", with several SME Solutions entities acting as data controllers.
Neither site spells out the corporate relationship between SME Solutions and SuperAnnotate. In practice, SME Careers is the front door for SuperAnnotate's expert work, under the SME Solutions name.
The application flow, in order
SME Careers' welcome page and the pages it links to describe this sequence:
- Create an account and verify your email.
- Fill in the data trainer application form. SME's "Applying as a data trainer" page lists a PDF CV (5 MB or smaller, PDF only), your country, native and work languages, education, work history, skills and an expected hourly rate. Your country must be supported by Deel, SME's payment partner; if it is not, SME says you "won't be able to proceed". SME automatically reads your CV to pre-fill your profile, and you can correct the result afterwards.
- Apply to a job. The Jobs page is public. SME's "Browsing and applying" page says you can apply once to each job, that pay rates shown are specific to your country, and that the job details show the interview language, which can depend on your country.
- Take the AI interview. Your application shows "Interview pending" with a Take Interview button. SME calls the interview "the main assessment step" and says your application cannot progress until it is done.
- Wait for grading, which SME says "usually takes 1–2 business days".
- A qualification exam, for some roles only.
- Screening, including a recruiter call for some roles.
- Onboarding through Deel and Discord.
- Project invitation and a paid bootcamp.
One inconsistency to know about: the application form page says the expected hourly rate is required, while SME's "Completing your profile" page says your hourly rate is "determined by our team" and that "there's no 'expected rate' for you to enter". Enter a realistic figure if the form asks, and expect the team to propose the actual rate.
What the AI interview actually is
From SME's "Taking the AI interview" page (updated 25 September 2026):
- Format. A recorded, conversational video interview. An AI interviewer asks about your background and expertise, and automated tools help evaluate your answers afterwards.
- Length. Scheduled for about 15 minutes, with a few minutes of grace at the end. An on-screen timer labelled "Scheduled Interview Time" counts down; when it runs out you may see "Time exceeded" with a short overflow counter while the interviewer wraps up, then the interview closes automatically.
- Structure. A warm-up question first, then role-specific questions about your skills.
- Pauses. The AI waits about 5 to 6 seconds after you stop speaking before it responds, "so it doesn't cut you off".
- What counts. SME says "concrete examples from your own experience carry more weight than general statements" and that if you do not know something, you should say so rather than guess.
- Language. Mostly English, but some roles interview in another language. The welcome page tells you which, and you answer in that language.
- Setup. A desktop computer with a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari; mobile is not recommended. A camera and microphone check runs first. Each interview link works once.
- Outside help. SME's warning is blunt: using Google, ChatGPT, notes or any other outside source "is detectable and results in disqualification". The recording is reviewed by automated and manual checks.
Before you start, you accept an "Interview Consent & Data Processing Notice". SME summarises it this way: the interview is recorded, AI systems generate summaries and an initial assessment, and "people make the final decisions". If you pass a stage, your recording and profile may be reused to match you to future roles, subject to human review. Participation is voluntary, and you can request an accommodation or an alternative interview format before beginning.
Any feedback you leave afterwards is used only to improve the process, "never to evaluate you", according to SME.
Retake and attempt rules
SME's "Interview results and retakes" page sets out the outcomes:
| Status | What SME says it means |
|---|---|
| Under Review | Submitted and being evaluated |
| Passed | Your application moves to "Qualified for role" |
| Needs Retake | You did not meet the bar, but can try again ("Retake available") |
| Not Passed | Not successful for this role |
| Incomplete | Did not finish, for example a technical problem or fewer than three questions answered |
The attempt rules:
- One interview, plus one retake if offered. SME calls this "the normal path". A retake only exists if your result comes back as Retake available; a Not Passed result does not give you one.
- Every completed interview counts, whatever the result.
- Incomplete interviews are free. SME says an Incomplete interview "does not count toward your limit, so a technical problem won't cost you an attempt."
- Further attempts are rare. SME says its team may grant one "in rare cases", but it is not automatic.
- No waiting period, but SME asks you to wait for your current result before retaking, to avoid duplicate records.
- The limit is per job. Using up your attempts on one role does not affect others.
Before a retake, SME suggests rereading the job description and finding answers that could use more specific examples.
Qualification exams
SME's "Qualification Exams" page says some roles add a written or task-based exam to confirm domain expertise, while others use only the interview. The rules it gives:
- The exam appears only after you pass the AI interview for that role. If you have passed and see none, the role probably has no exam.
- Exams are taken outside the SME Careers site, on a platform you are directed to.
- Some exams are paid. Payment shows as an exam earning on your Finance page, but cannot be released until your Deel contract is signed and your identity check (KYC) is approved. SME says payment then follows "within about 10 days" of the contract being completed.
SME does not publish exam formats, time limits or pass marks. For general advice on this kind of test, see how to pass AI training qualification tests.
After the interview: screening, onboarding and bootcamp
Screening. SME's screening page says that passing the interview qualifies you for a role but is "not the final step". The team reviews your profile and CV against the role, and for some roles invites you by email to a short interview with a recruiter. SME warns: "A missed appointment without notice can end the process." There is "no fixed timeline". SME also says not every qualified candidate is matched straight away, because openings depend on active projects.
Onboarding. Sign your contractor agreement through Deel, which includes an ID check, and link your Discord account; SME says both are needed before paid work. Its Deel page lists blurry photos, an expired ID or a name mismatch as common causes of a rejected ID check. Our guide to identity verification covers what these checks look for. SME is explicit that onboarding makes you "eligible for project matching" but does not guarantee a placement.
Project invitation. Invitations appear on your Projects page and by email, and each one expires on a deadline set per project. SME says declining "is not a penalty" and does not affect future opportunities.
Bootcamp. SME describes bootcamp as "a paid training period" where you learn the project's guidelines and complete training tasks reviewed by the project team. Your work is scored against the project's quality bar, and SME says the criteria and passing threshold vary by project. Pass, and you move toward production as, for example, an annotator or QA reviewer. Fail, and you are offboarded from that project only; SME says you remain eligible for others. Hourly bootcamps and projects use Insightful, a desktop time tracker, which SME's time tracking pages describe in detail.
Feedback. Beyond the status labels above, SME's pages describe no per-answer interview feedback.
What workers report
Everything in this section is what reviewers say, not what SME Careers or SuperAnnotate publish. We read both Trustpilot pages on 1 October 2026. Reddit and Glassdoor blocked our tools, so we could not include them.
- SME Careers has one Trustpilot review. Its sme.careers profile had a single one-star review, posted 29 August 2026. The reviewer said they were told their interview had been cleared, but that "after your interview with AI, they completely ghost you", and suggested the real aim was to collect interview videos to train AI. SME's consent notice says recordings may be reused to match candidates to future roles; it does not address the reviewer's allegation, and we have no evidence either way. SME does document that screening after a pass has no fixed timeline.
- The superannotate.com profile mixes customers and workers. It showed a TrustScore of 2.6 from 34 reviews, many from software customers or from 2024.
- Unexpected extra steps. An August 2026 reviewer on the superannotate.com page said there were more tests after onboarding that were unrelated to the role, complained about unpaid hours, and objected to being asked to install software on their equipment. SME's own docs say the hourly time tracker is Insightful and that bootcamp is paid, which is worth checking against whatever you are asked to do.
- Timed tests with tab switching blocked. A January 2025 reviewer described a 30-minute, time-limited Excel assessment where switching tabs to look things up was not allowed. That predates the current docs, but it fits SME's present rule against outside sources in the interview.
Prep checklist
Each item is tied to something SME Careers publishes:
- Check your country first. Your country must be supported by Deel, or you cannot proceed with the application.
- Upload a current PDF CV under 5 MB that shows domain expertise, not only job titles. SME pre-fills your profile from it, so check the extracted fields afterwards. Our resume guide has examples.
- Use specific skill tags. SME's own example: "Clinical pharmacology" works better than "medicine", because matching runs off your profile.
- Complete every education and experience entry, with dates. SME says a complete profile is matched against more projects and moves through screening faster.
- Read the job's welcome page before you press start. It lists the role description, key responsibilities and the interview language. Prepare two or three first-person examples for each responsibility, since SME says concrete examples carry more weight.
- Use a desktop browser, headphones and a quiet room, and close Zoom, Slack or anything else holding your camera or microphone.
- Take your time to think. The interviewer waits about 5 to 6 seconds, so a short pause will not end your answer. If you do not know something, say so.
- No search, no ChatGPT, no notes. SME says it is detectable and disqualifying.
- Treat the first attempt as the real one. You get one retake at most, and only if offered.
- If the connection drops, do not panic. An interview with fewer than three answered questions is Incomplete and free. Contact support if you were cut off mid-interview.
- Keep Interview reminders and Application updates notifications on, and answer recruiter emails promptly. A missed recruiter call without notice can end the process.
- Set up Deel early if your exam is paid. Exam pay waits on a signed contract and approved KYC.
- Respond to project invitations before they expire, then treat bootcamp as part of the assessment, because it is scored.
- Keep applying elsewhere while you wait, since SME gives no screening timeline. See applying to several platforms at once and, if you are onboarded with no work, accepted but no tasks.

Questions
- How long is the SME Careers AI interview?
- SME Careers' help centre says the AI interview is scheduled for about 15 minutes, with a few minutes of grace at the end so you can finish your last answer. It is a recorded, conversational video interview that opens with a warm-up question and then moves to role-specific questions. Most interviews are in English, but some roles interview in another language, shown on the welcome page.
- Can I retake the SuperAnnotate (SME Careers) AI interview?
- Only once, and only if offered. SME Careers says you take the interview once, and if your result comes back as Retake available you can take it one more time. Every completed interview counts as an attempt, further attempts are granted only in rare cases, and the limit is per job. An interview that ends as Incomplete, for example because of a technical problem or fewer than three questions answered, does not count.
- How long does SME Careers take to grade the AI interview?
- SME Careers says grading usually takes 1–2 business days, during which your application shows Interview under review. If you pass, your application moves to Qualified for role and the team starts screening, which SME says has no fixed timeline and may include a short interview with a recruiter.
- Does SME Careers give feedback on the AI interview?
- SME Careers' help pages describe status labels such as Passed, Needs Retake and Not Passed, but no per-answer feedback. SME says automated tools produce a summary and initial assessment and that people make the final decisions. Any feedback you leave about the interview is used only to improve the process, never to evaluate you.
- Are the SME Careers exam and bootcamp paid?
- Some are. SME Careers says some roles have a qualification exam after the AI interview, and that if the exam is paid, the money is released only after your Deel contract is signed and your identity check is approved, then within about 10 days. Most projects start with a bootcamp, which SME describes as a paid training period scored against the project's quality bar.
- Is SME Careers part of SuperAnnotate?
- SuperAnnotate's AI data services page links its Apply to join as an expert button to sme.careers, and the SME Careers site is titled SME Careers by Superannotate. The site's footer and privacy policy name SME Solutions Inc. as the operator. Neither site describes the exact corporate relationship between the two.
