What you'll do

This is project-based work for people who model optical, photonic or electromagnetic systems. You design realistic technical scenarios in your track, author expert-level reference solutions and grading rubrics, and evaluate submitted solutions for correctness, depth and domain judgment.

The ad names optional tracks that earn a bonus signal: integrated photonics and PIC design, metasurfaces and nanophotonics, antenna and RF systems, fiber optic communications, and DSP and wireless PHY.

Who fits

• Hands-on experience building or validating computational models of optical, photonic, electromagnetic, RF or communications systems
• Working proficiency with a named simulation tool such as Lumerical, Zemax, Code V, RSoft, COMSOL, Ansys HFSS, CST, Meep or Tidy3D
• Currently or recently active in the field, hands-on rather than purely academic-adjacent
• Comfortable with independent, asynchronous remote work
• 1 to 3 years of experience; Bachelor's, Master's or PhD

Preferred: a research publication record, open-source contributions or recognised work in optics, and experience reviewing or grading others' technical work.

What it pays

The board shows $100/hour, and the ad states the same figure, with milestone bonuses for consistent high-quality work. The ad does not say how bonuses are measured or when pay is issued, and it does not publish a weekly minimum. Work has no set hours or meetings.

Worth knowing

Good:

• A named-tool requirement means the skill gate is concrete
• Fully asynchronous, fits around a day job
• Narrow, specialist subject matter that few listings cover

Less good:

• The ad warns that candidates who meet fewer than 70% of the stated qualifications may be flagged for misrepresenting their experience, which could affect future project staffing; apply only if you fit
• Background checks are part of the review
• Project-based, so volume is not guaranteed
• Payment and onboarding details are not in the ad; see the company page
