What you'll do
Croatian sits close to Serbian and Bosnian, and a model that has seen little Croatian scientific writing may blur the three or fall back on English terms. This role wants PhD-level scientists who write precise technical Croatian to check how AI models behave on sensitive science in that language.
The tasks named in the ad:
- Writing expert-level prompts in Croatian on specialised scientific topics
- Evaluating and annotating model responses for scientific accuracy, helpfulness and appropriate handling of sensitive content
- Classifying prompts and conversations using structured guidelines
The science involved spans chemical, biological, and radiological and nuclear areas. The core skill is dual-use judgment: recognising which questions are routine research or teaching and which seek dangerous capability, and assessing whether the model answers the first and holds back on the second. You are evaluating safeguards, not producing harmful content.
No AI background is needed; Mercor trains you on the workflow.
Who qualifies
- A PhD in chemistry, biology or a closely related field, completed or in progress
- Enough depth to write across chemical, biological, or radiological and nuclear subject areas
- Native or near-native Croatian and business-level written English
- Deep familiarity with current laboratory and computational techniques in your subfield
- Sound judgment on scientific safety and dual-use information
The ad favours depth in one area over breadth (synthesis, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, genetics and similar). It welcomes radiological and nuclear coverage from chemistry, such as radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, energetic materials or radiation physics, plus work touching chemical security, biosafety or hazardous-materials handling, and experience reviewing, grading or red-teaming technical content.
Croatia or the wider Eastern Europe region is preferred, not required.
What it pays
$48–52 per hour, Mercor's published rate. That is $10 above the Croatian generalist role ($38–42) and level with the Ukrainian STEM version. The Western European STEM versions pay $61–65 and Norwegian tops the series at $77–81.
For a researcher based in Croatia, this is worth comparing with local academic salaries rather than with the Nordic listings: as flexible part-time income it compares well.
Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Active listing: 9 hires this month when we checked
- PhD candidates are eligible
- Fully remote on your own schedule, immediate start
- Draws on real subject expertise
Less good:
- Lower than the Western European STEM versions for the same PhD bar
- Hazardous-science material throughout
- No stated weekly hours, project length or end client; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- Independent contractor, no benefits
- H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
