What you'll do
French is spoken across Europe, Canada and large parts of Africa, and the ways people phrase a request vary with each: verlan and street slang in France, Québécois expressions, and West and Central African usage all differ from textbook French. A model whose safeguards were tuned mainly on English, or on formal French, can miss many of them. This role pays native speakers to test that.
The ad's three tasks:
- Writing expert-level prompts in French across a range of sensitive subject areas
- Applying structured guidelines to classify prompts and conversations
- Flagging adversarial phrasings and escalation patterns, and documenting the reasoning
In practice you write requests an AI model should refuse or handle with care, and flag conversations that escalate gradually. The sensitive topics are not named, so be prepared for difficult content. The ad asks for French without naming a variety; the France and Western Europe preference suggests European French is the main target.
Mercor trains you on the workflow; no AI or machine-learning experience is needed.
Who fits
- Native or near-native French plus business-level written English
- A bachelor's degree, completed or in progress
- Strong written reasoning and attention to detail
- Sound judgment around sensitive and dual-use information
Nice to have: experience reviewing, grading or red-teaming written or technical content, or a trust and safety, content moderation, policy evaluation or adversarial testing background.
France or the wider Western Europe region is preferred; French speakers elsewhere, in Canada, Africa or beyond, are explicitly welcome to apply.
What it pays
$48–52 per hour, Mercor's published figure, level with the German, Japanese, Korean, Danish and Finnish generalist versions; Norwegian pays more at $58–62. We did not see a French STEM (PhD) counterpart among the AI safety listings we reviewed on 24 September 2026.
Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Entry-level bar: a degree in progress counts
- No AI experience needed, with training
- Remote and self-scheduled, immediate start
- 7 hires this month when we checked
- Open to francophones worldwide, not only in France
Less good:
- Sensitive material by design, and the topics are not named
- Preferred variety of French not stated
- No weekly hours or project length; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- Independent contractor, no benefits; in France this usually means registering as a micro-entrepreneur
- H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
