What you'll do

Speech models are notoriously weak on Swiss German. It is mostly spoken rather than written, it varies sharply from Basel to Bern to Zurich to the Valais, and there is no single standard spelling. This project pays native speakers to close that gap by producing accurate transcripts of Swiss German (and some English) audio.

Beyond the words themselves, you annotate what a model needs to learn from: who is speaking when, linguistic nuances, and contextual cues in the recording. You follow project-specific guidelines for consistency, review and correct transcripts, raise ambiguities with the project team, and suggest improvements to the process.

The guideline that will matter most is how Swiss German is to be written down, whether in a Dieth-style dialect spelling, normalised toward Standard German, or something project-specific. The ad does not say; ask early, because it decides how fast you can work.

Who fits

  • Native Swiss German, with a good ear for regional accents and dialects
  • Professional-level transcription experience, ideally with Swiss German or multilingual audio
  • A record of consistently clean, error-free output
  • Strong written communication and care for linguistic accuracy
  • Discretion with confidential audio
  • Self-managed, remote working

AI training or linguistic annotation experience is a plus, not a requirement.

What it pays

$25–30/hour, micro1's own figure. The narrow band means there is little to negotiate, but it is well above micro1's German Transcription Expert listing at $10–22/hour, which reflects how much scarcer native Swiss German transcribers are. By Swiss living costs it is modest; for a Swiss German speaker living elsewhere it compares better. No per-task terms, hours or duration are stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A premium over standard German transcription for a genuinely scarce skill
  • A tight, predictable band
  • No AI experience needed
  • Ten openings, flagged high demand

Less good:

  • Modest pay against Swiss wage levels
  • Transcription conventions for dialect are not described in the ad
  • Repetitive, concentration-heavy work
  • No hours, duration or start date published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
