What you'll do

Mercor wants corporate lawyers to write evaluation tasks that measure whether an AI system can handle real transactional and governance work, pitched at the scale of major M&A deals, capital markets offerings and board-level governance problems.

Each "world" you build sits on one of two jurisdictional tracks, and you can qualify for either or both:

  • US track: Delaware General Corporation Law, SEC regulations, the Model Business Corporation Act
  • International track: UK Companies Act 2006 and EU company law directives

Within that, the output has three parts: a scenario (a multi-party deal, a regulatory review, a restructuring), reference work product such as legal memoranda, transaction documents and client or regulator-facing narratives, and a rubric that separates genuine deal judgment from bar-exam recall. Scenarios can involve the tools a deal team actually uses: Westlaw and Lexis, virtual data rooms like Intralinks and Datasite, contract lifecycle platforms and document automation.

Who fits

  • 5+ years as a corporate attorney or general counsel at a major law firm, investment bank or corporation; the ad names Wachtell, Skadden, Cravath, Latham, Kirkland and Sullivan & Cromwell, or in-house legal at a large public company
  • Direct ownership of M&A transactions, governance matters or securities filings, not just support on them
  • A working feel for how SEC review, antitrust/HSR (or the international equivalent) and board and shareholder oversight actually play out

A JD with bar admission, or an equivalent such as Solicitor or Qualified Lawyer in England & Wales, is strongly preferred rather than required. Prior rubric writing, training curricula or transaction documentation authorship helps.

What it pays

$90–100 per hour. The ad does not say what moves you within that band, and it gives no weekly hours. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Open to UK and EU-qualified lawyers through the international track, with no stated residence requirement
  • The work draws on deal instinct rather than rote knowledge, which is the part senior lawyers tend to find interesting
  • A tight pay band, so there is little guesswork about the rate

Less good:

  • $90–100 is well below what a senior corporate lawyer bills; Mercor's broader Law Experts listing pays $110–150 but asks for 20 hours a week and US residence
  • No hours or duration stated; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • The firm names in the ad set a high bar, even if they are examples rather than a list
  • Independent contractor
