What you'll do
This is task authoring, not grading. Mercor wants senior lawyers to create the tests that AI systems are measured against, pitched at the regulatory complexity and deal size of Fortune 500 and large public companies.
The work covers three kinds of output:
- Scenarios: realistic enterprise legal situations across in-house, regulatory, transactional and litigation work
- Reference work: model-grade drafts and reviews showing what a strong answer looks like
- Rubrics: detailed, criterion-referenced scoring that separates real legal reasoning from confident-sounding surface output
Subject matter named in the ad includes compliance regimes (FCPA, SOX, GDPR, HIPAA, and sector rules in banking, healthcare, pharma and insurance), enterprise contracting at scale (MSAs, SOWs, DPAs, licensing), M&A diligence, ERM and COSO-aligned risk scenarios, board reporting and regulated-industry investigations.
Who fits
The ad's ideal profile:
- 2+ years as in-house counsel at a Fortune 500 or large public company, or as a partner or senior associate at an AmLaw 100 firm with F500 clients
- Deep exposure to at least one of: M&A, securities, regulatory, employment, IP, privacy, or commercial contracting at F500 scale
- JD with active bar admission
- Familiarity with CLM platforms (Ironclad, Agiloft, Icertis) and enterprise GRC tools
Prior rubric, exam or training-content writing is a plus. If you have written bar-prep questions or CLE materials, say so.
What it pays and the commitment
$110–150 per hour, set by Mercor according to demonstrated expertise. There is a minimum of 20 hours a week, which makes this a substantial part-time role rather than an occasional side task. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise.
Onboarding runs through the Mercor Rubric Academy, a paid calibration program before live work begins. Strong contributors can move into reviewer, lead and domain SME roles at higher rates, per the ad.
The Mercor application for this role includes a General Assessment step on top of the domain interview, so budget time for that.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Paid onboarding, which is rarer than it should be
- A stated progression path to reviewer and lead roles with higher pay
- Very active listing: Mercor showed 330 hires on it in the current month when we checked
Less good:
- 20 hours a week minimum is a real commitment alongside legal practice
- The bar is high: F500 in-house or AmLaw 100 plus active admission
- US-based only
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders excluded
- Independent contractor, and projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
