What you'll do
This is a shared expert pool rather than a single project. After onboarding you can be matched to any of several concurrent dermatology workstreams depending on your subspecialty, availability and interest, and you may move between them as priorities change. The ad lists six kinds of work:
- Case interpretation with written reasoning: working through cases that pair images with patient history, and writing down how you got there, not just the impression
- Structured image annotation: describing lesions against a fixed schema (morphology, colour, configuration, distribution, body site)
- Differentials and severity: a ranked differential with reasoning, plus severity or progression grading from images
- Output review: judging AI-generated dermatological assessments, flagging hallucinated findings, missed findings and unwarranted certainty
- Grading criteria and guidelines: spelling out what separates an excellent assessment from an acceptable one
- Difficult cases: building cases that push model reasoning, including presentations that look different across skin tones
Tasks range from roughly 10 minutes for structured annotation to about an hour for full case authoring, and each stream comes with its own throughput target.
The practical difference from reading images in clinic is that your reasoning is the product. A correct impression with no written path to it is half a deliverable here, so expect to slow down and show your working in a way clinical notes rarely demand.
Who fits
- MD or DO with a completed dermatology residency
- Board certification (ABD or your jurisdiction's equivalent), or board-eligible with residency complete
- An active, unrestricted medical licence in your country of practice
- 3+ years of post-residency clinical dermatology, practising or previously practising
- Precise terminology across the full range of skin tones
- Written and spoken English fluency
- At least 15 hours a week, with the ability to concentrate hours when a stream is time-boxed
Preferred: fellowship or focused practice in dermatopathology, pediatric, surgical or complex medical dermatology; US licensure and board certification; prior image annotation, AI evaluation or dataset work; teaching or rubric design; and published research or technical writing (the ad asks you to link a sample).
What it pays
$270 per hour, a single published figure rather than a band. That matches Mercor's separate US-licensed dermatologist listing, but the bar here is lower on two counts: three years post-residency instead of five, and a licence in your own country of practice rather than a US one. The trade is a stated 15-hour weekly minimum, which the US listing does not publish.
Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise, and you are engaged as an independent contractor.
Worth knowing
Good:
- $270/hour flat, among the highest rates on this board
- Listed as remote worldwide with no location requirement, and a non-US licence qualifies
- Board-eligible dermatologists with residency complete can apply
- "Previously practising" counts, so stepping back from clinic does not rule you out
- Very active listing: Mercor showed 144 hires this month when we checked
- The skin-tone focus is real clinical substance, and it is where your input shifts model behaviour most
Less good:
- 15 hours a week is a real floor alongside a practice
- Pool matching means you do not choose the stream, and the work can change under you
- Throughput targets apply per stream, so the long, careful case work is still measured
- Contractor engagement, and projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported
- The end client is not named
About this listing
Posted by Mercor as an hourly remote contract open worldwide, confirmed open on 24 September 2026. The $270 rate, the 15-hour minimum, the licensure and board requirements and the workstream list are the ad's own. Mercor states the work involves no confidential information from any employer or institution, so your own patients' images stay out of it. See Mercor.
