What you'll do

Mercor is recruiting test engineers for a short-term project with a "leading technology organization". The ad lists the work type as electrical test automation, technical problem-solving and expert evaluation. It does not say outright that the output trains or grades an AI model, but that combination (short remote project, expert problem-solving, reviewing and validating technical approaches) is the shape of Mercor's model-evaluation engagements. Confirm the deliverable at interview.

The subject matter is real bench work:

  • Designing automated test systems, procedures and sequences for electrical and electronic hardware
  • Integrating instruments, DAQ systems and hardware interfaces
  • Writing test scripts, automation frameworks and data analysis workflows
  • Functional, performance, validation, regression and HIL testing
  • Root-causing failures in hardware and test setups
  • Reviewing test methodologies and results against requirements

Since the work is remote, expect to reason about test setups on paper and in code rather than touch hardware yourself. The ad does not say either way.

Who fits

  • Hands-on industry experience as an electrical test, test automation, electrical or hardware test engineer
  • A bachelor's, master's or PhD in EE, electronics, instrumentation, mechatronics or similar
  • Experience building or running automated electrical test systems with lab instruments
  • Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, C/C++ or equivalent
  • Instrument-control protocols such as SCPI, GPIB, USB, Ethernet, CAN or RS-232/485
  • Comfort reading schematics and test specs

Preferred: ATE and custom fixtures, NI hardware, LabVIEW/TestStand, PXI/PXIe, HIL/SIL, and testing power electronics, batteries, EVs, motors or embedded systems. High-voltage or safety-critical experience is a plus.

What it pays

$70–85 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. That sits $5 above the ceiling of Mercor's general Electrical Engineering Expert listing, for a narrower specialism with no stated minimum years.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • No stated minimum years of experience; hands-on test work is the bar
  • One of the few evaluation listings aimed squarely at test engineers rather than designers
  • Remote, self-scheduled, weekly pay

Less good:

  • "Short-term project" with no hours or length given
  • The AI angle is implied rather than stated
  • Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
  • Contractor terms, no benefits
