What you'll do
The ad is blunt about what it wants: "authoring and judgment work, not throughput." You take a realistic, complicated situation from your own practice area, build the supporting materials (models, memos, filings, data), and then author and evaluate the finance tasks AI agents are trained on.
Mercor names three priority areas where it is hiring hardest:
- Investment banking and M&A: DCF, comps, precedent transactions, LBOs, merger models, fairness analysis, diligence and execution
- Private equity and private credit: underwriting, LBO modeling, capital structure, covenant analysis, portfolio-company work
- Corporate finance and FP&A: three-statement models, forecasting and budgeting, variance analysis, capital allocation, board reporting
Also in scope: equity and credit research, asset and wealth management, quant finance and risk, derivatives pricing, treasury and capital markets, corporate development, valuation-driving technical accounting under US GAAP or IFRS, real estate and project finance, and finance regulation (Basel, SEC reporting, capital adequacy).
Who fits
Required:
- 3+ years of recent, hands-on finance experience at a recognized institution (investment bank, asset manager, PE or credit fund, Big Four, a large corporate finance function, or a regulator)
- Currently working in the field. Recently retired or career-changed candidates do not meet this as written
- Direct use of the tools the work runs on: Excel modeling, plus Bloomberg, Capital IQ, FactSet, data rooms, ERP or consolidation systems, or quant platforms where relevant
- 10+ hours a week
What moves you up the pile is evidence you owned the analysis: the model behind a live deal, a valuation defended at investment committee, a forecast cycle you ran, a financing you structured. VP-and-above titles, experience on both buy and sell side, or across two disciplines, all count in your favour. An MBA, MS or PhD, or a CFA, CPA, FRM or actuarial credential, is preferred, not required.
The ad goes out of its way to say this is not bulge-bracket only: boutiques, middle-market advisory, hedge funds, family offices, insurers, lenders, fintech and regulators all qualify.
What it pays
A flat $100 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. That sits $30 above the operational Non-Investment Finance Expert track, and at the floor of Mercor's existing Finance Expert grading role.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A lower 3-year bar than most $100 finance listings
- Mid-market, boutique and buy-side backgrounds explicitly welcome
- 10 hours a week is a manageable minimum next to a day job
- Authoring rewards seniority rather than speed
Less good:
- You must be currently in the field
- Flat rate, so senior MDs earn the same as 3-year associates
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
- Contractor terms; projects can be extended, shortened or concluded early
