What you'll do
Mercor wants engineers who have run product programmes at large manufacturers to turn that experience into evaluation tasks for AI. You design an enterprise scenario, produce the reference output a senior engineer would sign off, and write the rubric that tells a grader whether a model's answer reflects real engineering judgment or just coursework recall.
The ad frames everything around Fortune 500 practice:
- Areas: product design and CAD modelling, thermal and fluid systems, structural and stress analysis, manufacturing process engineering, and reliability and failure analysis
- Tools in the scenarios: SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, and PLM systems such as Siemens Teamcenter and PTC Windchill
- Methods: FEA and CFD simulation, DFM/DFA, Six Sigma and DFSS, and GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS
- Outputs: design specifications, engineering analyses and executive-level technical narratives
As with the sister civil and electrical listings, each task world sits on a standards track: US (ASME) or International (ISO). Either qualifies you.
Who fits
- 5+ years as a mechanical engineer or engineering lead at a Fortune 500 or major industrial, automotive, aerospace or manufacturing company (the ad names GE, Boeing, Caterpillar, Ford, Honeywell, Siemens, Bosch, Rolls-Royce and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as examples)
- Direct ownership of large product designs, manufacturing processes or certification programmes
- A practical grasp of safety standards, certification (ASME, ISO, FAA, FDA) and cross-functional design governance
- A PE or equivalent (CEng, EUR ING) and prior rubric or training-content writing are a plus, not required
The employer bar narrows the pool most. If your strong experience comes from smaller firms, Mercor's separate Mechanical Engineer listing (US-based, full-time W-2) asks for industry experience without naming employer size.
What it pays
$70–80 per hour, identical to the civil and electrical expert listings. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Mercor showed 285 hires on this listing in the current month, a strong sign it is actively staffing.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Very active: 285 hired this month
- ISO-track engineers are welcome, not just ASME
- No credential is required, only preferred
- Remote and self-scheduled, with weekly pay
Less good:
- The Fortune 500 or major-industrial employer bar is narrow
- No weekly hours or project length stated
- Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
- Contractor status, no benefits
