  • housing law
  • consumer law
  • legal writing
  • ai output evaluation

What you'll do

This is an evaluation role, not task authoring. You read AI-generated legal analyses of the problems that dominate legal aid intake (housing, family, consumer, foreclosure and debt) and judge them the way an experienced pro bono supervisor would review a volunteer's work: is the reasoning sound, is the procedural guidance right, and does the answer account for the realities of an unrepresented person trying to use it?

Each review ends in a structured written evaluation that flags legal errors and access-to-justice considerations. The ad does not describe the format, volume or tooling beyond that.

Who qualifies

Required:

  • JD
  • Active US bar admission
  • Experience running or taking part in pro bono initiatives
  • A strong civil practice background
  • Excellent legal writing and analysis

Preferred: having served as Pro Bono Counsel or Pro Bono Partner, coordinating clinics or volunteer attorneys, breadth across several civil practice areas, and experience with legal technology or AI.

What it pays

$170 per hour, a single published rate. That is well above Mercor's $90–100 band for senior-lawyer scenario writing, which suggests Mercor values the breadth this role asks for. No weekly hours or duration are stated. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The highest rate in Mercor's current legal listings
  • Breadth across civil practice areas is the asset, which suits generalist legal aid and pro bono lawyers
  • Review work rather than drafting from scratch

Less good:

  • Active US bar admission is required
  • Thin detail: no hours, volume, duration or assessment described
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
