What you'll do

This is the public interest member of Mercor's family of senior-lawyer evaluation roles, and it is the one written for people who spent their careers at legal aid offices, advocacy nonprofits and AG offices rather than at big firms. You write scenarios that test whether an AI system can reason like an experienced public interest attorney, along with the reference work and the rubric that grades it.

Scenarios cover civil rights litigation, environmental compliance and enforcement, and community advocacy or policy reform. Practice areas named in the ad: civil rights and constitutional law, environmental law, housing and consumer protection, immigration and asylum, and government accountability. The reference outputs are the documents this work runs on: briefs, regulatory comments and advocacy memoranda. Tools in the scenarios include legal research platforms, the case management systems legal aid organizations use, and regulatory dockets such as EPA's.

Two tracks, and you can qualify for one or both:

  • US: federal civil rights statutes, NEPA, the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act
  • International: international human rights law and treaties, EU environmental directives

Who fits

  • 5+ years as a public interest attorney at a legal aid organization, advocacy nonprofit or government agency; examples in the ad include the ACLU, Earthjustice, NRDC, the Legal Aid Society and state attorney general offices
  • Direct ownership of impact litigation, regulatory advocacy or policy reform work
  • Practical understanding of how rulemaking and legislative advocacy actually move

A JD with bar admission or an international equivalent is strongly preferred. Prior rubric, training or policy authorship is a plus.

What it pays

$90–100 per hour, the same band as Mercor's corporate, litigation, regulatory and IP versions of this role. For many public interest lawyers that is a better hourly rate than their day job, which is not true of the big-firm variants. No weekly hours are stated. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • One of the few senior legal AI roles that values nonprofit and government experience on its own terms
  • International track opens it to human rights and EU environmental lawyers, with no residence requirement stated
  • Busy: 59 hires shown this month

Less good:

  • No hours, duration or project details beyond the scope description
  • Five years of direct ownership is a firm bar; supporting roles on impact cases may not count
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
