What you'll do
Much of RF engineering is intuition about fields, propagation and trade-offs that is hard to write down, and that is what anyone testing technical reasoning needs from an expert. This short-term project, run for a leading technology organisation, pays specialists to supply that judgment.
The ad describes the job as technical problem-solving, analysis and expert evaluation:
- Solving hard RF and electromagnetic engineering problems
- Analysing systems, components, antennas, circuits and architectures
- Working from specs, requirements, simulation results and engineering data
- Judging design trade-offs, performance limits, calculations, assumptions and proposed solutions
- Validating approaches and writing rigorous explanations, following project-specific evaluation criteria
The ad does not name AI directly. The "expert evaluation" framing and project-specific criteria match Mercor's model-evaluation work, but ask what the deliverable is before you commit.
Who fits
- Hands-on industry experience in RF, electromagnetics, microwave, antenna or related engineering
- A bachelor's, master's or PhD in EE, electronics, RF engineering or electromagnetics
- Solid EM theory and propagation fundamentals
- Practical depth in at least one of: RF and microwave systems, antenna design, EM simulation, RF circuits, EMC/EMI, wireless or radar or sensing, propagation and channel modelling, or RF measurement
- HFSS, CST, COMSOL, MATLAB or ADS is a plus
Preferred extras: an advanced degree, mmWave or phased-array and MIMO work, radar or satcom, lab characterisation, and publications.
Practical experience applied to real systems is explicitly weighted over theory, which is good news for industry engineers without a research record.
What it pays
$80–95 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. That is above the $70–85 Electrical Test Automation Engineer and $70–80 Electrical Engineering Expert bands Mercor lists for related electrical work.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A higher band than Mercor's related electrical engineering listings
- No employer-size bar and no stated minimum years
- Remote, self-scheduled, weekly pay
Less good:
- Short-term, with no hours or length published
- AI involvement is implied, not stated
- Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
