What you'll do
This is the mid-senior tier of a three-listing set Mercor runs for the same embedded AI lab role, split by seniority so that the rate follows experience. It is aimed at lawyers who have reached counsel or senior associate level but not partner or general counsel.
The day-to-day is the same as the other tiers. Working inside the lab's own tools and alongside its research and program teams, you:
- Review legal tasks and model answers for missing steps, weak reasoning and conclusions that would not survive scrutiny
- Write instruction specs and golden solutions that set the standard for "correct"
- Design difficult legal tasks and evaluation sets, and help build legal-specific skills and tools
- Calibrate with researchers and adjacent specialists, turning tacit judgment into explicit criteria
Who fits
- JD from an accredited school (highly ranked strongly preferred)
- 8 to 15 years of substantive post-qualification practice at a firm, legal department, regulator or court; internships and clerkships alone do not count
- Currently at, or having reached, counsel, senior associate, senior in-house counsel or Assistant General Counsel level, with real ownership of matters
- Specialization in at least one practice area, such as corporate, litigation, regulatory, IP, employment or tax
- Admission to at least one US state bar, in good standing
- Hands-on professional use of LLMs
- 40 hours a week for an initial 6 months
The ad is direct about fit: earlier-career lawyers should apply to the base Legal Domain Expert listing ($60–100), and partners or GCs to the Partner and General Counsel listing ($100–150).
Location and employer
Hybrid, Bay Area. You must live there and work on-site several days a week when required; relocation is self-funded. Employment is W-2 through Cincinnatus LLC, an employer of record separate from Mercor, which handles payroll and benefits. Mercor's contractor payment terms (weekly Stripe or Wise) are not part of this listing.
What it pays
$85–120 per hour. For a full-time 40-hour week that is a real salary, though still below what a senior associate at a large firm earns. The ad does not say how the rate is set within the band.
Worth knowing
Good:
- W-2 with benefits, not contract work
- The seniority split means the rate is pitched at your level rather than averaged across all three
- Direct collaboration with a frontier lab's research team
Less good:
- On-site Bay Area requirement with unpaid relocation
- Full-time and exclusive in practice
- The lab is unnamed, and the term beyond 6 months is not addressed
