What you'll do

This is stress-testing by building. Rather than grading model answers, you write real software on top of a frontier lab's pre-release models and find out where they break. The cohort is deliberately spread across language ecosystems, so your second language matters as much as your first.

Day to day, per the ad:

  • Building full-stack apps, services and internal tools in Python, Java, Rust, C#, C++ or TypeScript that exercise the model end to end
  • Integrating pre-release model APIs, including tool interfaces, evaluation harnesses and telemetry
  • Diagnosing and documenting model and integration failure modes, and writing them up for the research team
  • Prototyping fast against shifting requirements, with little up-front specification
  • Working with the lab's engineering manager and other engineers on code quality and documentation

Who qualifies

  • 3+ years building and shipping production software at a recognised, top-tier organisation
  • Production experience in at least one of Python, Java, Rust, C# or C++, plus working proficiency in a second
  • Full-stack experience: backend services and APIs, React or an equivalent front end, relational or document databases, cloud deployment
  • A track record of onboarding onto unfamiliar codebases and shipping quickly
  • Demonstrable career progression
  • 40 hours a week on weekdays
  • Must be located in India

What it pays

$25–30 per hour, published in US dollars. That is the India-market version of this role: Mercor's US Software Engineer, Full Stack listing asks for the same 3 years and pays $50–65. For India, $25–30 an hour at 40 hours a week is a strong full-time rate for mid-level engineers.

The ad does not state who the employer of record is, whether this is contractor or employee status, or how and when payment is made. Ask before you accept.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Hands-on building with pre-release frontier models, useful experience in its own right
  • Competitive for the Indian market
  • Direct work with the lab's engineering manager

Less good:

  • Full-time and 40 hours a week, so not a side project
  • Payment terms and employment status are not published on the listing
  • "Top-tier organisation" is not defined
  • No duration stated
  • Requirements shift quickly; the ad says so
