Android Engineer (Kotlin and Java)

What you'll do

You review AI-written Android code the way a senior reviewer would. The ad lists the places models tend to slip: Jetpack Compose recomposition and state hoisting, coroutine cancellation, threading and ANRs, lifecycle and background execution limits, persistence and release practices. You rank competing responses, write reference implementations, and spell out your reasoning step by step so the data teaches why something is wrong, not only that it is.

It is review and authoring work done remotely and paid hourly, not app development for a client.

Who fits

  • Four or more years building production Android apps, with Kotlin 1.6+ as the main language and Java a plus
  • Strong command of coroutines, Flow, sealed types and null-safety
  • Compose and/or View-based UI, lifecycle, permissions and state restoration
  • Architecture experience: MVVM, Clean Architecture ideas, Hilt, Dagger or Koin, modularisation
  • Networking and data with Retrofit or OkHttp, Room, SQLite or DataStore
  • Testing with JUnit, instrumentation, Compose UI tests or Espresso, plus security basics such as Keystore use
  • English at C1 or above, written and spoken

A computer science or software engineering degree is asked, with equivalent practical experience accepted. Earlier AI data work is a strong plus.

The role is open in 16 countries, mostly South and Southeast Asia, plus Germany and the United States.

What it pays

SME's listing says up to $110 an hour, with no floor stated. The ceiling matches the mobile and frontend roles on the same board, such as Angular at up to $90, and sits well above its language and generalist roles. The listing does not state how or when you are paid; the company page covers SME's Deel payout cycle.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • One of the higher ceilings on SME's board
  • Work is technical review in a stack you already know
  • Lets you shape how models explain modern Android practice, not just legacy patterns

Less good:

  • The wording on SME's side says "frontend expertise" in the pitch, which suggests copy reused from sibling listings; read the requirements, not the pitch
  • No immediate project; the ad says qualified applicants are contacted when relevant work opens
  • Up to $110 is a ceiling, not the typical rate

About this listing

Posted on SME Careers (sme.careers), where SuperAnnotate hires subject matter experts, and read on 27 October 2026. The board gives no posting date. The duties, requirements and pay are SME's own text; the comparisons and commentary are ours. The interview, Deel contract, bootcamp and time tracking are covered on the company page rather than repeated here. The ad says there is no immediate project for this role; qualified applicants are among the first contacted when relevant work opens, which also gives access to future projects in the expert network.
