What you'll do
The job is writing questions about existing models. You open native FreeCAD files of high-fidelity aerospace assemblies, work out how the parts fit and function together, and then write several objective, multi-part questions per assembly that only someone who genuinely read the geometry could answer. The ad's phrase is "non-guessable": a model should not be able to land the answer from general knowledge or a lucky estimate.
Each question gets a clear, well-researched answer that points back to the assembly data. The questions are meant to cover main features, functions and part-to-part relationships, and to stay "program-agnostic", which reads as avoiding anything tied to one aircraft program or proprietary context. You also feed into documentation and workflow feedback that shapes later question sets, and you clarify requirements with the team mostly in writing, occasionally by call.
What this tests is your ability to read someone else's design intent from a model tree and assembly constraints, then turn it into a precise, checkable question. Engineers who have reviewed other people's CAD, written test questions or taught design will recognise the skill.
Who fits
Everything in the ad is listed as preferred rather than required:
- Expertise in aerospace, mechanical engineering or industrial design, grounded in CAD principles
- Hands-on work with multi-part assemblies, and the ability to read complex design intent and technical drawings
- Strong written and verbal communication about technical detail
- FreeCAD or a similar CAD platform (FreeCAD exposure is explicitly a plus, not required)
- A record of writing precise technical questions and answers, ideally in an educational or documentation setting
- A careful, objective eye for detail
No years of experience, degree or country requirement is stated. No AI background is needed.
What it pays
$40–80/hour, micro1's published band. The ad does not describe a compensation structure, so it does not say whether that is hourly or a per-task equivalent, how placement in the band is decided, or how many hours a week are on offer. Ask at interview.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 50 openings, flagged as high demand
- Reading and questioning assemblies is lighter work than building parametric models from scratch
- FreeCAD experience is not required; SolidWorks, CATIA or Inventor users can transfer
- Industrial designers are named alongside engineers
- No country restriction stated
Less good:
- The ceiling is $80, below the $100 that micro1's FreeCAD modelling listings reach (Autodesk Fusion 360 Specialist and Autodesk Inventor Specialist), though those ask for 4+ years
- No compensation structure, weekly hours, project length or hiring steps are published
- Writing questions that are truly non-guessable is harder than it sounds, and rejected questions are a likely source of rework
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
