What you'll do
micro1 is recruiting Inventor users for a project that actually runs in FreeCAD. The ad's argument is that strong parametric modelling in Inventor transfers, and prior FreeCAD experience is ideal rather than required. Inventor people used to iLogic-driven parameters and derived parts will find FreeCAD's spreadsheet-driven parameters and PartDesign bodies a reasonable, if less polished, translation.
The tasks:
- Build fully parametric parts and assemblies from detailed written briefs
- Edit existing models to revised requirements without breaking their parametric structure
- Audit models against dimensional, tolerance and manufacturability criteria, documenting what you find
- Create and interpret technical drawings to ASME Y14.5 or equivalent GD&T
Compared with the sibling Fusion 360 listing, this one puts more weight on drawings: creating and interpreting them is a named task here, not just a skill. DFM runs through everything, across injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC and casting or forging. Each edit and audit comes with written rationale, because the reasoning is what the AI is trained on.
Who fits
- At least 4 years of hands-on parametric modelling for edit-level tasks; 10+ years for complex creation work
- Inventor expertise, with FreeCAD, SolidWorks or Fusion 360 counted as highly relevant
- Practical GD&T to ASME Y14.5 or equivalent
- DFM experience across two or three manufacturing processes
- Assembly-level design of complex mechanical systems
- Reverse engineering (scan-to-CAD, point cloud to model) and scripting (Python, iLogic, VBA, NX Open) are pluses
What it pays
$30–100/hour, micro1's published band. That floor is $10 below the Fusion 360 sibling's, while the ceiling is the same, which makes this the widest band in micro1's CAD set. Nothing in the ad explains how placement works; the two experience tiers are the obvious candidate, but that is our inference. No compensation structure, hours or duration is stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 29 openings
- Drawing and GD&T depth, the part of Inventor work many CAD roles skip, is valued here
- An explicit edit-level tier for engineers with 4 to 9 years
- iLogic scripting experience counts
Less good:
- The $30 floor is low for a 4-year-minimum engineering role
- The work is in FreeCAD, not Inventor, and ramping up is unpaid time as far as the ad says
- No hiring process, weekly hours or project length is published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
