What you'll do
Despite the title, the project software is FreeCAD. micro1 recruits under the Fusion 360 name because strong parametric modelling in Fusion transfers directly, and says prior FreeCAD experience is ideal. Expect to spend the first days mapping your Fusion habits (timeline, sketches, joints) onto FreeCAD's feature tree and workbenches.
The work itself comes in three kinds:
- Creation: turn a detailed written brief into a fully parametric model of a mechanical part or assembly, with clean sketches, sound constraints and a feature tree that survives edits
- Editing: update existing models to new requirements while keeping them parametric and manufacturable
- Auditing: check models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application and design intent, and write up the gaps
Across all three you document why you made each decision, because that reasoning is the training signal. DFM knowledge is applied throughout: injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC machining and casting or forging are named.
Who fits
The listing sets experience bars by task type: 4+ years of applied experience for model editing, 10+ years for complex model creation. Beyond that:
- Extensive parametric CAD experience (ideally FreeCAD; Fusion 360, SolidWorks or Inventor accepted)
- Real-world GD&T to ASME Y14.5 or equivalent
- DFM expertise in at least 2–3 of the manufacturing processes above
- Assembly-level modelling, not only single parts
- Reverse engineering (scan-to-CAD, point cloud conversion) is highly valued
- CAD automation or scripting (Python, iLogic, NX Open, VBA) is a strong plus
What it pays
$40–100/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length is stated. The two experience tiers suggest that creation work sits toward the top and editing toward the bottom, but the ad does not say so; ask where your tier lands before you start.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Real CAD work with a clear split between editing and creation, so mid-career modellers have a way in
- Fusion, SolidWorks and Inventor users all qualify without FreeCAD
- 20 openings
- Scripting and reverse-engineering skills are rewarded rather than ignored
Less good:
- You will work in FreeCAD, which has rougher edges than commercial tools, and learning it is on your time
- A 2.5x band spread with no published basis for placement
- The 10-year bar for creation work is steep
- No hiring steps, hours or start date are published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
About this listing
Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal and read on 24 September 2026. The $40–100/hour band, the FreeCAD note and the 4-year and 10-year experience tiers are micro1's published text. A near-identical sibling recruits Inventor users for the same FreeCAD project: Autodesk Inventor Specialist, on a $30–100/hour band. See micro1.
