What you'll do
The "Instructor" in the title is the clue: the job is to model the way an expert designs and then explain it, so an AI system can learn from both. You take product requirements and design robust, manufacturable multi-part assemblies in a parametric CAD tool, making and justifying the calls on architecture, component placement, mating and tolerance stack-ups.
Alongside the models you write: design rationale, best practice and design for manufacturability notes, plus annotations on the 3D models themselves. You also review and critique sample designs, giving detailed feedback on modelling strategy and whether the design is feasible, and contribute teaching or mentoring material drawn from your own CAD experience.
The work is remote and asynchronous, with queries from the project team answered in writing and sometimes verbally. The ad does not state weekly hours.
Who fits
- Five or more years of professional CAD design, including leading decisions on complex assemblies (architecture, mating strategy, tolerances and DFM)
- Mastery of a major parametric package: SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape or Solid Edge; FreeCAD familiarity is a plus
- The ability to explain design logic, trade-offs and assembly intent, both in documents and in live discussion
- Experience mentoring or teaching CAD, formally or informally
- Comfort working remotely and asynchronously, with close attention to detail
The notable line is about credentials. A recognised CAD certification (the ad names CSWE/CSWP, Autodesk Certified Instructor or Expert Elite, ASME GDTP and SOLIDWORKS Champion) is described as highly valued and able to substitute for the formal experience bar. No prior AI experience is needed.
What it pays
$40–90/hour, micro1's published band. The ad does not say what places you inside it, whether pay is for time or per deliverable, or how many hours are on offer.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A certification route in: CSWP, CSWE, Autodesk Expert Elite or GDTP holders may qualify without the five-year bar
- Any major parametric CAD tool counts
- Creative design work rather than only checking other people's models
- Teaching experience is valued directly
Less good:
- A $40 floor for expert-level assembly design, with no published basis for placement
- Writing rationale for every decision takes much longer than the modelling itself
- No weekly hours, project length or pay structure stated
- Ten openings, fewer than most micro1 CAD listings
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
How it differs from micro1's other CAD listings
It shares its $40–90/hour band with micro1's Senior Mechanical Design Engineer listing, posted the same day, but the work runs the other way: that role interrogates existing assemblies and checks AI reasoning, while this one has you design, annotate and explain your own. The nearest older listing is SolidWorks Specialist ($40–100/hour), which also builds parametric models for AI training but runs its project in FreeCAD.
About this listing
Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal and read on 2 October 2026, the day it went up. The $40–90/hour band, the ten openings and the qualifications above are micro1's published text. Location is listed as Remote with no country requirement, and payment schedule and method are not published on the listing. See micro1.
