Skills
  • civil engineering
  • code compliance
  • technical documentation
  • constraint reasoning
  • rubric writing

What you'll do

You are building an exam for an AI model, set by a working engineer. Each task is a realistic civil engineering problem in areas like structural design, transportation, water systems or site development, and each one comes with everything a real engineer would need to solve it.

The workflow for a task looks like this:

  • Set the problem. Write a challenge that forces constraint reasoning and code compliance, not textbook recall.
  • Build the file. Source or create the supporting documents: drawings, geotechnical reports, spec sheets, cost estimates, code references, plus realistic CSVs, PDFs and spreadsheets.
  • Solve it. Work out the correct engineering answer, with every regulatory and geometric constraint satisfied.
  • Write the rubric. A multi-item rubric an LLM grader can apply to judge technical correctness and code adherence.

Then iterate with the project team on clarity and realism.

Who fits

  • At least five years of professional civil engineering across more than one domain
  • A PE licence, or actively pursuing one, is strongly preferred
  • Strong technical documentation, including code-compliance and design specifications
  • Experience sourcing and applying regulatory codes
  • Comfort producing or reviewing drawings, reports and datasets
  • Clear technical writing

No AI experience needed. Engineers who have written PE exam prep, set graduate assignments or reviewed junior engineers' calcs will find the rubric writing familiar.

What it pays

$50–100/hour as the band, but compensation is output-based: paid per task that meets specification, with a weekly minimum number of tasks the ad does not quantify. Because each task includes building a realistic document package, early tasks will take longer; your effective rate improves as you reuse your own templates.

micro1's separate Civil/Structural Engineer listing is BIM drawing work at $30–50/hour.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Uses real engineering judgment, not just labelling
  • 50 openings, marked high demand
  • Broad: structural, transport, water and site engineers all qualify

Less good:

  • Per-task pay; building document packages is slow at first
  • Weekly minimum stated but not quantified
  • Five-year bar, with PE strongly preferred
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
