What you'll do
The project centres on how parts actually get made, and the ad describes a working machinist's full loop:
- Set up and run CNC machines, from desktop units like the Makera Carvera to industrial mills like the Haas VF-2
- Load and prove out programs, install tooling, fixture the work and set offsets
- Run first-piece cycles, inspect against the drawing and adjust the setup
- Diagnose tool wear, chatter and dimensional drift, and handle routine maintenance
- Measure with calipers, micrometers, indicators and CMM
- Read drawings, GD&T callouts and manufacturing documentation
- Feed back to CAM programmers on setup and manufacturability
The AI angle is your knowledge of all that: the input on processes, best practice and fault-finding that a model cannot pick up from manuals. The desktop-plus-industrial pairing is the distinctive part, since hobby machines and Haas mills fail in very different ways.
A question to ask first
The role is listed as remote, yet the scope reads like hands-on machine work. The ad does not say whether you need access to your own machines (a Carvera at home, a Haas at work), whether the work is recorded at a shop, or whether it is purely advisory. Clarify before applying, because the answer changes who can do it.
Who fits
All listed as preferred, though one is described as required:
- 5+ years of hands-on CNC machining, setup and production
- Expertise with Haas controls (VF-2 or similar), described as required
- Familiarity with desktop CNC such as the Makera Carvera, strongly preferred
- Blueprint reading, GD&T interpretation and advanced measurement
- Work across metals and plastics
- Strong written and verbal English for documentation and feedback
- Troubleshooting skill and a safe, organised workspace
What it pays
$80–120/hour, micro1's published band, well above typical shop-floor machinist pay. No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length is stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A strong band for machinists, with a floor that beats most CNC wages
- Hobby and desktop CNC experience counts in your favour
- 10 openings, flagged as high demand
Less good:
- Unclear how "remote" squares with operating machines
- Haas control experience is effectively mandatory
- No compensation structure, hours or hiring steps published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
