What you'll do

The ad is precise about the craft. You design and tune PID and modern controllers (LQR, MPC, Kalman filtering) of the kind deployed on robots, drones, vehicles or industrial plant; build plant models from first principles and check them against data in state-space and transfer-function form; and implement and verify the control code in Python with open-source stacks such as python-control, SciPy, CasADi and do-mpc, with Julia ControlSystems and OpenModelica also named.

Documentation is a real deliverable: clear written reasoning for each engineering decision, plus verbal discussion when needed. The ad does not spell out the AI task format, but the emphasis on runnable Python and written justification suggests reference solutions and explanations a model can be trained or evaluated on.

Who fits

  • A bachelor's or higher in control, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics or aerospace engineering
  • More than five years of controller design after the degree, with deployment on real systems; simulation-only experience is explicitly not enough
  • Classical PID plus at least one of LQR, MPC or Kalman filtering delivered on hardware
  • Plant modelling from first principles and from data
  • Fluent Python for control development and validation
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Valued extras: a graduate degree, production MPC, Modelica, Julia, system identification, embedded C/C++, ROS, nonlinear or robust control, publications or open-source work

What it pays

$30–50/hour, micro1's published band. That is low for the stated bar: five-plus years of deployed control engineering usually commands far more, and it is well below micro1's other engineering listings in this set (the Materials Science Expert role runs $80–150). Weigh it as supplementary income rather than a rate matching your market value. No pay structure, hours or duration are stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Concrete, technical scope written by someone who knows the field
  • Open-source toolchain, no licences needed
  • Newly posted

Less good:

  • The pay is well below the experience demanded
  • The hardware-deployment requirement rules out academics without industry work
  • Only 10 openings
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal three days before we read it on 24 September 2026 and marked new. The band, openings and requirements come from that listing; no country restriction is stated. Payment schedule and visa terms are not published on the ad. See micro1.
